View Full Version : The First Journey-First Painter Attempt
TheBeatnik2334 12-26-2007, 08:04 PM Hello All,
After observing the Forums, I decided to post my first attempt at using painter. I sketched the pose in Painter then painted it will little to no reference. I was curious however; this peace feels plasticy to me. It could be that it is in black and white, or due to harsh highlights. (It’s in black and white because I am colorblind, so it is difficult for me to paint in color.) Comments or Criticism is welcome. Thanks again.

Good job capturing the emotions:thumbsup: what I think you could do to get rid of the plastic look is enhance the cheek bone area with more highlights and shadows on the groom, it could also work on the forhead and on the eyebrows.

I don't know if you would like help with the anatomy, but the girl's eye is too large, Her back is too round, since you can't see his arm it appears she is just floating. The man's head is too small on his shoulders and the his ear is too small.
You did do a good job on the emotions and facial expressions, but the pose needs work. References even just for minor details would increase the image quality exceedingly. Are you planning on a background? because it looks rather plaing without one.
To rid it of the "plasticy" feel it helps to sweep over a soft brush. Since I use photoshop, I wouldn't be able to tell you is painter has any "soft" brushes to smooth out the picture without it being too glossy.
and remember I think it's a most beautiful picture, and i'm only giving pointers to make it better.

Thanks to you both for the reply.
yes, usually when I draw, my anatomy is quite so warped, but I have the tendancy when I paint to expand more and more with each brushstroke until Im about an inch wider than my original sketch. I guess I still cant color within the lines
This piece was a mess when working on it. Im used to photoshop and its layer system, and as you can see, I just couldnt seem to make all the elements of the piece work between layers.
I appreciate the advice from you both, Ill keep this all in mind as I work on future pieces.
