View Full Version : My first piece
Lenton 12-26-2007, 02:04 PM Hey, Ive been using photoshop for a while but until now have never felt that I could do anything worthy of being called art on it. this is my piece, based on a figure illustration from an osprey book. Scanned in and completed using graphics tablet. I really want to be as good as some of the artists here, and I know its rubbish but I just would like come comments/suggestions really.

I would like to point out that the angle of the spear is not such that the staff of it would be in his hand. Therefore it seems to be floating in space, while his hand grasps some other very dark weapon.
You forgot a key part to all eyes, aka the tear duct which is a common mistake, but a big one none the less. It is very easy to notice even to nonartists but often forgotten, so studying real eyes will help you understand their accurate shape. The eyes also have iris's that look like they are made of either the wall they are on or the skin of the face they inhabit. There are no visible pupil, but that can be explained by their dark color.
The shading on the helmet makes it appear like it has been dented in multiple places that I doubt you wanted it to be. Instead of smooth shiny metal, it looks like your poor guy has had his head pounded on.
His shading is a bit off if respect to his light source, but another would have to help you as I too am not great with shading. However, the shading from the shield does not follow the contour lines of the body making it appear flat.
This is a good start if you are just learning, so keep at it and though it may seem like it won't happen, eventually you will get better!

I know what it's like both to start young and feel like it wont get better. Keep posting, I'd love to see more. I wonder if you've heard of deviantart, it's free and you can upload your art there and get feedback also. There's alot of great people and tutorials there so if you're really interested that would be a good option.
