Hi there,
first I want you to check out the hi-res, because this image was done primary for closeup looking. But I take care also about the overall "shape".

THANK YOU GUYS :) love to hear that you like it
Wen-Jr - the postprocess was adequate for the size of the image. It was rendered in several pases. The fog was added and colorized in post, etc. As for panting, the 99.9% of the pisture is modeled, I painted just few effects like, haze around the water and waterfalls, smoke coming from fire, rainbow etc.
I will post a wire/shade later today...

Very well done! i can see why this piece of work took a year to finish, the end result is very impressive to say the least, and that's probably a understatement. The attention to detail is outstanding on it's own. :)
You deserve all those five stars given to you for this one.

doylle - Luckyly, I have got just a new Quad with 4gb ram before I rendered it out. It took apx 20 hours to render (on my old 2hgz machine it would be 160 hours, lol), mainly because the MTD displacement which is on the whole lower half of the picture, and combination of MTD, blurry-anisotropic reflection on the upper part of the water :) also the original render is 3500x4668

Firstly let me say that this is awsome, staggeringly detailed and beautiful.
But I still have some small crits.
In your impressive hi-res picture i can see parts which dont look as high quality as others, for instance, at the lower left hand corner, the trees and grass have a pc game look about them, i'm pretty sure i can see textures strected over planes in there.
Some of the ropes holding the bridge look like candy sticks to me and the ridges in the rope are exadurated.
The waterfalls at the bottom right don't look as real as the water effects further away, and the water coming out of the pipes, at the highest resolution look like steam. I know water turns to vapour sometimes when it falls but yours looks like its vapour/fully-turbulent coming out of the pipes IMO.
There is a badly places tee over the windmill, i cant tell whether its in the background or physically growing off the windmill in the foreground. Obviously its the former, but still, it played tricks on my eyes.
Some of the rocks at the very bottom have an overly CG look about them, maybe the textures are a bit streched, its a tiny crit.
Sheep dont look that wooly at hi-res. Horses legs look a bit strange.
I'm really having to look hard to find problems. When you get brilliant work you get hard crit.
Awsoem stuff anyway!
PabloCZ
12-26-2007, 03:43 PM
Excellent work! The details and concept are amazing, however I still have some critics:
Overall I think that increasing the contrast migh improve the impression. Also, I find the background more cut off than necessary, looks a bit unnaturally to me.
I also agree with some stuff written above - the waterfalls, rope etc.
However, as said before, really wonderul piece!!!

It really WOW~! to see this piece. You've done a really great job mate! Here I have some little thought to share with you.
I think it would be better to do some paintover on the spaceship on the far end side so that they won't look all the same as it is now, a little bit boring & duplicated on that area while the rest of the image is so well done.
The rock on which the big pipe coming out look very natural but those on the bottom middle (which just left-hand side of the waterfall) look very displacement. However, I really love the effect of the waterfall, and that is what I always fail to archive. Would you mind to share how you did it? big thanks in advanced.
also... 5 stars +fav from me! :thumbsup::applause:

Ditto. I am currently sitting in a dark corner sucking my thumb and twirling my hair...
This piece is so incredible. It makes my mind do gymnastics! I try to picture the type of civilization this is. The stark contrast is so brilliant. You get lost in one only to follow your eye to the other one and you get smacked by it. I love this so much!

This is fantastic, great juxtaposotion. I do have a crit though, for the immense iffle tower-ish sort of structure on the very left of the screen. It seems that the horizontal levels(floors) fall out of perspective as they progress higher and higher. It might just be my perception, since I know how misguiding perspective can be, but I can't shake the feeling.
Excellent work nonetheless, and I saluted your dilligence!

I just finished exploring the super high-res image. Reminds me of 'Where's Waldo' pictures where you can stare at them for 10min and still discover new bits scattered all over the place.
The subject matter is really cool too. Do you have a backstory to go along with it?

12-27-2007, 08:43 PM
Just as Kiaran said the great thing with that picture is that you can discover some new details every second no matter how long you lock at it.
I think this work is showing a modern conflict of human life also: On the one hand we want progress and development all the time but on the other hand most of us want to go "back to nature" in a way.
So all in all a very great piece of cg-artwork

thank you everyone for such beautyful comments. you made my day
aelex - yes I meant something like you have said, but I really dont want to explain it. Everyone should unedstand it by himself :) I made it not to be explaind, but to made people think at least a little bit .
Hooch - this waterfalls are just blending two materials, foam and water with mask, which was painted with tablet with reference a photo of water falling from a sewer. And then this mask was also used in displacement as you can see on this small part of displace texture...

Fantastic job! This has a wonderful, slightly stylized feeling to it that reminds me of a miniature diorama in a museum. Your attention to detail is absolutely mind-blowing.
My only crit, when I first looked at it a couple days ago, was that the city seems too uniform in building size and shape. I can see that there are many different shapes of skyscrapers, but they are all evenly lighted and placed so they create a rather uninteresting visual wall. Personally I would have liked to see a bit more varied spacing and scale, but that's a small thing in such a spectacular image.
My second thought when I saw this was, "Ewww, they live next to the sewer drain!". And I just noticed there's even con-trails in the sky! Amazing. I must add that I would rather live in that village than that city. :)

Gee, all the great things I could say have already been said; great render, amazing detail, and so on. What speaks to me most is how the village below is threatened by encroaching "progress", having its simpler way of life stifled by an impersonal, monster-like city.
Wonderful work. 5*

As you are mentioning stars, is interesting to look how poeople vote. It totaly reflects human personality, if the row of votes could be published(for Choice award pictures) it would always look something like 4545554445554545554511111111111154555443454544455455545555544554111151111 as I can tell from observation of my votes. :)
But the stars are nothing important for me, but it was a little fun to watch. :)
I think it should be changed somehow(to let vote users with 100 posts and above etc)
or removed at all.

How do you come up with such an insanely detailed scene?
My computer is pretty powerful, yet its not a part of a rendering farm or anything, and it couldn't possible render a tenth of the details displayed in that picture.

I'm curious as to what about the village reads as "scum" or "derelicts"? Looks like a peaceful agrarian society to me. Just farming and fishing.

Hey man, you have a eagles eye :D Yes it should be the lion, but it didnt turn out very well with diplacement and I didnt have a strenght to fix it :D It looks better on the diffuse texture :D

Excellent work, is very very impresive... Five star for you my friend..
Are there more than just the lion?
I swear I can see more, like what looks to me like the face of an Aztec sculpture, and the profile of an elderly person or Quentin Tarantino.
This is now as I'm looking at the hi-res image.
When I first spotted the lion, I was only looking at the image embedded in the thread.
Now that I'm looking at it alot, this is something I might expect to see from a collaborative effort of several artists.
Did you use stock models for the humans?
radoxist
12-31-2007, 04:16 PM
Dtox - Yes there is something like an aztec sculpture, but I dont think it is hidden. Face of a Quentin Tarantino? ROFL where do you see that?
Everything is modeled by myself, nothing is from stock models. I couldnt stand that kind of models in a own personal project :)
Haha..
OK, think of Quentin Tarantino's face head on, now rotate that in your mind to a profile view.
Diagonally down to the right of where the lion is there's a place where the rock face extrudes outwards.
Right there.
It looks like either the profile of an elderly gent, or Quentin Tarantino.
Is the Aztec sculpture in the same place, just diagonally upward from the lion?

"Jory let's go see your mother!"
"We can't right now Raina," Jory fired for the 11th time. "I told you this meeting means everything to me."
"It'll only take a couple of hours and she really needs you especially today!" Raina sweated against the harsh leather that she had just pollished a few moments ago before loading up the briefcase, the tubes of layouts, the heavily laden luggage her father-in-law had so graciously and royally provided for the trip and that damned dog of his.
"You don't remember what it was like! We were plenty happy until YOUR father insisted you serve the administration. I never needed leather seats. Its hot in here."
"Raina, we'll go down as soon as General Hoden finishes his speech. If I don't get every last inch of his ego on this set, Arl will pin me on the Galactic Needle and have the entire fleet use me for target practice."
"ROOF! ROOF!!" Hagley pierced Raina's ear drums and she knew she was going to have a grinding headache the rest of the afternoon.
"Such a sweet doggy!" Jory spittled out in babytalk. Raina dug through the bags at her feet and discovered a SouperTreat(tm) under the tulip pot she'd picked up for Sondra.
"Here boy!" she pitched the stinky wad over the head rest with hopeful finallity. Hagley disappeared over the back seat with his treasure. Ill gotten and well deserved he thought. The car warbled over 5th Street and Raina could feel the vibrations from the machinery below, pumping, spewing, screaming some throbbing song of industry, toiling away automaticly for its masters. She almost ducked again as the 9th Street connector passed overhead, overloaded with shoppers moving from market to market. The noon cloud cover was just barely visible over Vincent Avenue as it diminished into a thin line, buried by inescable verticallity encased in steel and glass, plastic and light. She rubbed her craining neck as she readjusted to look back into her reflection in the windshield. Three, maybe four Gs, wow Jory was going way too fast she thought as the engine throttled hard inside a right, then a left onto the outbound number 3 South airway. Her body instantly compressed into what used to be a cool cloth back support now smelling of ArmorIt(tm) that surely was staining her white frock. Level 35...72...108...
Hanalee Plaza's azure dome blurred below her right periferal view as Jory locked the autodrive, reclined his sparkling new upholstery collection and flicked his shoes off into the passenger floor, his toes resting firmly on the center display. He pressured the zoom detent to get a better view of Ecura shrinking behind them.
"Aaahhhh! Minnithestian hide! Best you can buy! Always wanted a set of these."
"I know." Raina hoped he wouldn't snore again. Maybe at least he wont drool...
---
"Raina dear!!!" came Sondra's voice over the earpiece. Raina relaxed a bit as she heard her mother-in-law sounding much better. It was the one pleasant thing that kept her going with Jory sometimes. "You better hurry up, we've got roast! and your favorite pie!" Shrill and begging scuffly noises threatened to cut off the conversation somewhere in the distance and a tinny pipey crumpled Sondra issued a warning to them. ***ssshush now im talking to Raina! Go play with Balors' kids*** "Tilly is waiting for you to sing her dinner tune and BoBo wants to show you his guitar! LOL"
"I know I know Mom...sigh...Jory has a shoot..."
"What??! Everybody is expecting you to be here. Dad would've wanted it that way."
"I really wanted to be there yesterday. I promise," Raina waded through, holding back sobs. "Jory says we'll be down there after the speech. Can you meet us at the Livery? About 7?"
"Child! You know it'll be almost dark by then and I have to work the mill tonight. Ohh!...*sniffle*...I can barely keep us alive without Chad... Will you stay the night?"
"I'll try Mom. We're almost out of range."
"Ok Raina darling! I love you! Keep that snotty son of mine out of trouble, hear?"
"Ok Mom! I lo....*ssssssssssshhhhhhh* Damnit! she shoved the earpiece into her cuff just as the fins in the rear view image on the center display snapped out of view. Its headlamps shrieking under the radar assembly just ahead. Too dark to see, too loud to hear as more than 100 feet of Lesquires Mark VII slithered and glistened, module by module, antenna by antenna, only a slipstream of smog allowing them to stay uninvolved.
"SHOWOFF!" The officials always drove the best ships. She couldn't understand why they had such terrible manners though.
---
"Bobo! Take that hog back outside!"
"Maaaa! He wont eat much!"
Sondra turned Bobo around, motivating him outward, dragging a stickely cord. Hog scratched the door frame with his hind quarters and managed through, regretting the cluttered table behind him.
"And close that door!"
"Yeess Ma'am!"
Unhindered, Sondra kept the spoon moving, splattering a bit but making good progress inspite of the heavy array of taters and other glorious mixins churnin n' simmerin around a prize shank of beef, wafting through her nostrils, steaming, almost able to taste now....mmmmm a bit more basil...yes. Chad would've liked that.
"Sondra, you never shoulda let that boy keep that beast. You know what happens to them."
"I know Tilly dear, but I just didn't have time to disappoint him. He'll learn soon enough." Sondra hated to see them growing up, but pets were few lately. Everything went to keeping them clothed and fed. What could one do?
"When is Raina coming in?"
"Baby, she's not coming. Jory is working. Always a hot job. I don't see how she makes it with him."
"Aaaaww." Tilly bore out her bottom lip and stamped her right flat in the dirt. She missed Raina more than Jory. Blood wasn't so thick she didn't think. Administration my hiney she blasted on to herself. Stupid old General. "I wouldn't give that bloated old rat a good funeral if I could snap his neck."
"Now Tilly, don't talk like that. The Officials have many ears. Go get the kids to the river, they've got be bathed first. And make sure that hog gets it!"
"oh...alright." Tilly didn't mind children. Realy. Oh they were heathens but anything for Mom. Hog actually helped some. He made sure they got in.
"BooooBoooo! Tell that swarm they've gotta go to the river right now!"
"Okaaaaaay!" Bobo hollered back, dragging Hog along, an extra length let out of his leash. Bobo didn't wanna step in anything, but Hog didn't mind it. Tilly plodded along the path strumming her fingers along the fence, kicked a rock or two, down, down, leaning over at the gouging shells and dusty stacks of shale, virtually crumbling as you looked at them... Looking for something else... he was down there, pretty sure. Down...plodding a few steps, why was it so hard to go down the hill, afterall it was down right? She thought herself smartlier than most. Who else ever thought of such things? Aaah one day a penthouse over the Dazzler, that'll be the day...yes...oh there he is! Quite sure. Semmer sure had a wide chest an' taller than a Hangfish. Mm! She thought she'd marry that boy one day. She hopped and skipped down the rest of the way weaving through the Elders, past the woodsmen, past the hurders. Nearly knocking Semmer over she swung him around and planted a big tonguey kiss on his face and put on her biggest smile.
"Well HEY girly!" Semmer beamed. "Doweeatchet Tilly doll!"
"Noooo smarty pants. We gotta warshe the younguns."
"Weee gotta?"
"YES wEEeee gotta." She clamped his ear tight with both hands and whispered a sneaky ***it'll be fun!!*** Tilly started to haul Semmer out of the mens circle as he drug his feet. "OK! Les, i'll git back to ya on that blower, I need a bigger fire!"
"Ok Sem, later." Les was pretty sure he could get a good deal on that shop. Sem was a fine metal man, maybe the best.
Tilly plowed past the townsmen n' smelly old pipes n' cruddy old fiddle playin' and dumb old war tales. Whistles and catcalls and Jim and Fin and all the other guys callin'.
"Hey Sem where ya goin!"
"Whoo hoo Sem!"
"Go git 'er Semmy boy!"
"When ya gittin married Semmy! hahahhahahah!!" the men chimed.
Tilly gathered up her man's whole arm in both of hers and walked him along the shore a little ways from the heathens. She could see they were doing all right. Hog was doing his job ok. She found a nice big sandy spot next to the falls where she could dangle her feet and plopped down pulling Semmer with her. Tilly hummed a little tune that she wasnt sure what it was as the flow wore off the tired daytime, flats and all. She felt good. Semmer took off his boots though. You couldn't get a new pair very often. Mom would pelt him if he didn't take care of them.
"Do you think about the city Semmy?"
"No..why should I?"
Oh...I dunno. I think its faaabulous. All reachin fer the stars n' shinin' haaa*sigh* An those little bubble cars flyin around in the sky...that must be fun. Doncha think its amazin anybuddy could make such a thing?"
"Pff. All I see is sewer pipes. I could make something shiney for ya. We found a great seam of Blittium today! Man! You wouldn't believe it Tilly! I bet even the Administration ain't seen a lode a this stuff that pure! Those suits are gunna make us rich finally. We been working fer them too hard not to pay off."
Yeah yeah... she sat a while, an eye on BoBo and the others. They'd learned better than to get too close to the end. Good Hog. Shame he'd make feast next month. Oh well. Have to train a new one.
"Kiss me Semmy," Tilly pouted...
---
"That's a smart young man you raised there Mit." Uncle Bo loved Tilly more than anything. At least since Chad got it at the plant. Poor Sondra, slavin' over that mill 6 nights a week. He wondered how she'd make it. He hoped Sem would take care of Sondra and Tilly and BoBo. He'd better. That damned Jory sure wouldn't. Can't even make it to a dinner now and then. What a rich pathetic loser he turned out to be. Yes. Sem would be a family man. Yes sir. No doubt about it.
Mit pushed the back of his hat up over his freshly shaved neck. The front settling comfortably onto his nose. "Yeeeeessir." He thought about how beautiful Tilly was and hoped she'd do good by Semmer. A man needs a good woman behind him. "Quite a catch that darlin' Tilly."
"Put yer eyes back in yer hat old man, that's my niece yer harpin fer."
"Yeeeesir. Make a fiiine couple they do."
"Mit you got the hurd fat enough yet?" Chank was gettin' a bit itchy over the wait. The auction was late this year. He hoped Mit would get off his lazy bum and finish the deals up.
"Chank. tsk tsk. Yer always in a big hurry this time a year." Mit wondered why everybody was always fussin. He always delivered the hurd when it came time. Must think they're Sky dwellers or somethin. Why don't they slow down. "Did you guys appoint the committy yet?"
"Why yes we have," Chank answered as if there were ever a question about it.
"Who's on it?" Mit wondered if he was falling asleep yet. Poor saps...whoever they were...
"Caint tell ya." Chank paused a goodly while trying to humor Mit's obvious desire for him to act like a stagnent well.
"Not til' the meetin."
Mit didn't bother replying to Chank. No sense in it.
---
Sondra finished putting the last of the pots on the table as the men filtered in, throwing out their last smokes and chuckling, murmering and carrying on as only men do, then the women whispering and talking discreetly, then the children quietly. She tossed another quarter on the fire as her spoon hand was free, letting the roast spoon settle in the pot. She hurried to the stove again to catch the last pan of biscuits before it was too late. Chad didn't like them too brown. Not that it mattered any more but she wanted to make him proud in her heart anyway. The kitchen window offered a view of the city that didn't quite catch the sewer output. For a moment she halted, searched for that one car...maybe she was there...no, impossible to tell. They made millions of T90s. Millions of White ones in fact. She hoped Raina was safe. Only thing in that city worth looking for. Sondra knuckled a drop sneeking down the right side of her nose, then picked up the butter tub. They'd need lots of butter.
"Where's them biscuits Mom!?" Semmer hollered from the great room. Purples filled the clouds now, the smog was fading, the stars peeking through. Sondra put on her best smile for her Tilly's intended.
"Coooomin Semmy!!!"

obviously great work and all that, but the scale to me makes it look like the people in the foreground are really tiny ant size people. since everything is so realistic i assume you are going for that on purpose but its not 100% clear, maybe some other scale reference in the foreground would clarify? its not really a problem but im just not sure when im looking at it. based on the pipes and water splashing out and that cliff, it makes the foreground appear tiny. if thats what you are going for, great.

obviously great work and all that, but the scale to me makes it look like the people in the foreground are really tiny ant size people. since everything is so realistic i assume you are going for that on purpose but its not 100% clear, maybe some other scale reference in the foreground would clarify? its not really a problem but im just not sure when im looking at it. based on the pipes and water splashing out and that cliff, it makes the foreground appear tiny. if thats what you are going for, great.
Yes thats what I was looking for. For example the bigges pipe is around 30 meters wide. I took care about the scale all the time, but the realism is not my primary goal, but secondary. Sometimes an estetic reasons wins over the realism. I dont want to say there are no problems in the scene(it is nearly impossible with this kind of scene), but Im quite satisfied where I have got it:)
i'm speechless! the water looks amazing! 5 * here also

Hi radoxist,
You created a very nice image here, and I compliment you on that.
If you don't mind, I have some critics as well.
Some very valid crits have already been posted, like the repeated'ness of the building structure of the above city, and on the sewage pipes.
Although these issues did not immediatly bother me.
What did catch my eye immediatly, and I am amazed no one has mentioned this, is the stream in the bottom right of the image.
I can see your reasoning here. The water flows from the land to the ocean. However logical that may be, it does not work for the image.
As the viewers eye moves down the image, so does he has the impression that the water is flowing down with him, and this feeling remains with the viewer untill he reaches the two small waterfalls in the borrom right.
The image would work better if you had inverted the flow of those two waterfalls.
You also see how the two little boats on the right side of the stream are pointing down towards the viewer. This also gived the impression the water is flowing downward.
You can of course disregard what I have just said, and I'm not expecting you to do the fixes I mentioned.
But have a look at the image and think about my points.
I'm looking forward to see more of your work :)

Ive been a lurker on CG Society for years but have never before posted a comment on someone's image. i beleive i would be doing a hard working artist a disservice to not be another voice in the crowd about this image. IMO this an an image that could be created by a team of 10 talented, enthusiastic, and creative people. to do this all by yourself makes you one heck of a talented, enthusiastic and creative team.
congradulations on finishing such an ambitious project.
you deserve all the props you get for this one.

thank you everyone for great comments :)
Dziba - I like windmills more, just simple as it is. I could tell that there is quite windy atmoshpere and overall the energy from wind is more powerfull than from than from stream, but the estetic side of it is more powerfull than logic for me.

Only one thing...why Windmill by the river ? :)
Ha! I love the windmill, but your comment made me wonder why the "river people" wouldn't rig up some water-wheels under the effluent pipes across the river. That would take this from a "mere" 6-star image to a 9-star image :)

I just noticed this thread.
Excellent work! I agree with an earlier post, it usually does take a team of people to create something like what you have there. To be able to do it by yourself is nothing short of astounding.
5 stars!
On a sidenote, I'm curious as to how long it took for this to render.

The unique thing that i do not like is the color of the ants, that walk among the weeds.
No way!!!
Really you are a very self-sacrificing artist, the detail of the illustration is incredible, i would like some day to be able to do the same type of work.
