View Full Version : Modeling : Lathe problem
Whipshock 04-22-2003, 06:58 PM I am trying to create a teapot-like model however
after using the Line tool to create my desired shape and attempting to apply the lathe modifier, my end result isn't as I want it
as you can see in the attached screen shot, the inside is hollow, yet the outside is fine.
i have tried playing with various settings such as
Direction X Y Z
Align Min Center Max
and Flip Normals however nothing seems to work
any help would be appreciated
thanks

Actually it is working fine,...
Open shapes loft, extrude, etc AS 2D faces..
You could perform an outline to close your spline OR use a 2 sided material and the current geometry. Clearly the first option is the way to go if you are going to raytrace this pot with a glass shader.

sorry im a newbie :hmm: didnt quite understand the first step you were describing ..... but during my web search i found that if i go to the Viewport Config and check "Force 2-Sided" rendering then it shows the entire - complete model.
It seems like i wasnt really misssing anythign it just wasn't showing it
Is this different from what you were saying?

Try enabling 'weld core'
I think that will do the trick....
Too much coffee!
OK, here is my opinion on 'force 2-sided'...
Forget it exist!!!!!
This setting doubles you render calculations for the whole scene!
Now for some more noob tips;
1. In sub-object spline, you can select and outline your spline to close it up and give your pot some thickness.
2. You can create a shader (material) that is two sided.
3. You can right click and set the object properties so that back face culling is off in the viewport allowing you to see both sides in the GUI.
4. BTW there appears to be a smoothing problem on the bottom of your pot.

When you work with open geometry always create a 2-sided material and assign it to the model. So you can see what you want (what is hide like you said...)

Cool!! the Outline under Spline is great - just what i needed!
But yeah one more thing - as you said on the bottom its unsmooth, why is that?
I used 2D guides and made a perfectly straight line... :annoyed:
Not sure why the smoothing is off, but have your tried the suggestion of welding the core? Next I would try a smooth modifier or collaspe to a mesh and tweak the smoothing.

Im not a pro with max but understanding your a noob i dont think you should FORCE 2-SIDED... Just make a material for it and make that 2-sided... by forcing 2-sided you will make Max render everything (Assuming you add more to the picture) 2-sided. even things that you wont be seeing 2 sides of making rendering times longer and more demanding on ur PC's resources

before you lathe it, there is an option called outline. You have to be in sub-object mode, i think is the mode where with one click you select the whole spline. Once that is done just goto to ouline and enter an amount, that way when you lathe it, you will hve a n object with geometry for the inside and out side...if you want a video tut let me know, and i will make one for you.
force2 side is a half assed way of doing things. This way is far superior
when you lathe also click weld core
