woodhull 12-24-2007, 08:25 PM As a somewhat new C4D user, less than a year, I have been given the ok to purchase a third party renderer such as vray, FR, Maxwell, ect. I do moniter this forum everyday so I know you people are very up speed on everything C4D so I am asking for advice. Thanks in advance.

Please be more specific on what you want the renderer for. If you are looking for general opinions on those engines please use the forums search, this has been discussed in depth several times.

i would recommend VRAY
so far seems is the most stable, works on PC and Mac with C4D and also is well a known render engine in the 3d world.
maxwell is cool and can produce some really nice images, but it is slow and the plugin for c4d is not very mature. maxwell on maya and max seem to have better plugins. it also is very focused on realism and may be more difficult to get stylized renders.
FR2 is good and is most close to VRAY in overall feature set, but has left a lot of unfulfilled promises... with constant teasers that never get met. overall i am most disappointed with cebas over this. they seem scatter brained on focus with max and maya and cinema falling behind. the big OSX announcement they made the same day that VRAY was announced for c4d was just more marketing puffery as nothing has materialized since that "announcement" (again)
also don't forget AR - you didn't say if you owned Advanced Render or not - but it is a very good tool and has a lot of abilities with just a few areas that are showing some age, but maxon has always proven to be resourceful and i think advanced render will mature and grow and not be left for dead as most other 3d apps have done with their standard render engines.
being i own all three this is my opinion, but i've seen a lot of similar views on the forum. the developers of the VRAY for C4D plugin have done an incredible job.

Depending on what you use it for I would, but my best bet would be vray or final render.
maxwell and fryrender can produce awesome work, but for my workflow they are completely useless. I need fast turnaround,I often import huge scenes with 100s of materials, converting all that in maxwell(granted I have only tried the demo) is very timeconsuming not to mention it takes forever to get something to render that is grainfree.
in vray the material conversion is done by pushing a button I am told, and final render renders native cinema materials.
as dann said AR is not that bad, and can produce great results in the right hands, and probably they will update it soon.

Hi
I am in the same situation, trying to choose between FR and Vray. To me Vray seems to be more specialized on architecture than FR. I mostly work with organic stuff like proteins and such and there is not many pictures of that in either gallery.
At the moment I tend to go for the FR since they seem to be more general. But then again the developers of Vray for C4D seems more enthusiastic and focused on C4D and that means a lot too.

it is true that vray is very popular among architects,
but of course it is in no way specialiced in this field, you can do all with it:-)
both, fr and vray are very adjustable and open to all kinds of renderings...

Personally, for that kind of work I would stick with AR. The significant advantage of VRay and fR is in GI rendering, which probably isn't that big of an issue for medical animations and the like.

That's true, it's the geek in me that want's more tools to play with :). I am perfectly fine with AR today but some of the stuff on Vray and fR websites are so cool my creditcard hurts.
Cheers
