Hey all!

Here is a link to my website. I am still working on it, currently it only has a section for my thesis which I complete here at Ringling School. If you guys want to check it out go right ahead.

Thelvin's Website (http://www.rsad.edu/~tcabezas)

I would say that my thesis is finally done!!! I could still work on some errors and stuff, but the deadline is far from been over.
Anyways tell me what you think!

thanks all!

That is a really nice story, having everything in the imagination being portrayed and then changed by the voice of reason of the father.

The technical execution is good as well. Great job!

That was AMAZING. The thing I liked best, was the black bars on top and bottom of the screen. They actually reacted to the environment. That was very creative. The scene transitions were great too.

This also had one of the best uses of lighting I've ever seen. Great job, man. wow.

Congrats on a wonderful short, Thelvin. You did a magnificent job of capturing that little spark of joyous imagination that is so ellusive. I loved this thing when I saw it during thesis reviews last December and I love it now.

Fine work. This is one of the best student works ever.

Agree'd. Very inspirational. Can't wait until you get "the making" of section up on your website. I saw this a while ago too...only thing was that although I loved it...it' was kinda depressing the way the father was so mean all the time. But at the same time you can argue that he was just trying to get the kid to bed. In general, it doens't hinder my opinion that it's one of the best completed student films I've seen. Great work. The transitions and bars that change shape are incredible. :D

Pretty awsome. I thought the little girls voice was way better acted than the father's, which I thought was the only week point of the film. Was that really the voice of a kid or was it someone older who can make a kiddy voice?

Thank you all for the kind comments. Is comments like this that keeps you going.

Ohh sorry for the people that are having compression problems. I am using Mpeg 4 codec. I though this was a very wide used codec.
I also have a small divx version if you want.

www.rsad.edu/~tcabezas/movies/thesisFs.avi Hope that helps

I really like and respect Tim Burton's style (don't we all), the darkness in his art appeals me but sometimes is just too dark. I like more "cute" stuff, but with a twist to it.
Bogo is a little monster, cute and ugly at the same time.

E.Z. Schwartz

I agree with you, but I didn't pay for a professional actor, maybe I should've.
The little girl's voice is actually from a little girl :) 12 years old I think (not sure maybe less). I recorded a hundred takes while she repeated sentence by sentence what I wanted.
I had to work hard to make it fit together using all those takes, a lot of work.

imashination
"I seem to remember this being pulled so it could be entered for a video festival of some sort. what happened with this?"

I took it down for two reasons. First cause it was spreading beyond my control over the net and at the time I didn't wanted to. I didn't wanted to caused at the time it wasn't finished.
And second caused I thought there was a problem regarding Festival submission rules. But just to make things clear, neither siggraph electronic theater nor Student academy awards have any rules against posting the film online. I think it is only for the oscars(best animated short category).

Don't think you are going to have trouble finding a job with this one!!! I love it all!!! I really like your usage of the aspect ratio of the screen and the way you use the water effect and the heat effect. The lighting is awesome and your character is cool as well!!! All around great job!!! Kinda reminded me of the Family dog where the little girl is rambling on during the home movie sequence!!

Really really sweet... I second what others have said about the 'father's' voice acting - but it doesn't detract from such a lovely short.

I want to take this film, roll it into a tube and beat the creators of the 'Chubb Chubb's' around the head with it (in a nice way) :D

I also want Bogo on my desk... :D

That's amazing. That's.. amazingly cool. I love it! Everything else has been said already, so I'm going to leave it at the ego-stroking positive remarks .)

From what I've seen of The Cathedral and Chubb Chubbs (and, yes, Mike's Car, but let's not go into that) I'm wondering why on earth this wasn't nominated........

You're movie's delightful, and I hope to see more of your work in the future!

However, if I may be just a tiny bit critical, the movie appears too dark and low contrast when viewed on a PC in a normal lighted room. This seems to be true of both the QuickTime and the DivX videos. Did you perhaps optimize the gamma range for a Macintosh (or SGI) rather than a PC? Or perhaps for viewing in a completely dark room?

The result is that it's quite hard to "read" the character's expressions in the dark scenes.

You might want to consider adjusting the brightness and contrast the next time you encode this movie.

This is such an excellent work Thelvin. You're succesfully displaying your best:thumbsup:

Fine character design & art direction. The shading/ texturing/lighting bring up the moods. I really like the rather 'clayinstopmotion' feel to it.

Animation, cuts & direction :buttrock:
I's a little nice touch when the candy pops up after the ice melted.

But what I like most is the story and the way you brought this to life. Emphaty is what I have missed in shorts lately. You got it! And it moves me. This quality that I wish I could bring to live in my future short that I'm about to work on (it also got to do with a child as the main char in the dream vs reality theme, but diff. kind of story & style). Wish me luck man :)

You rock on Thelvin

Oh yeah where the hell did you find the talent for the child?
Sweet as sweet as the candy:thumbsup:

I am so glad so many of you like it. This is exactly what I wanted my thesis to be, something people could enjoy and get emotionally touched.
I can't thank you all enought...

Raden
Yes, empathy was something I wanted to capture. I have seen a lot of computer generated films that look beatiful but that as far as it goes.
Feeling sorry and been touched its the hardest emotion you would want the viewer to feel. shallow laughts seem to be the only thing important this days. I want to cry of happiness or sadness for a character, not laught that his head exploded or some other stupid gag.

the3DBEAST
I agree with you, this year was a good one for Ringling. There is lots of talent among all my friends. Next year is going to be better than this anyways.

shrimp_chip
I actually fix the contrast and brightness on a PC. I'll have to check back on this, you may be right. I hate how something looks good on one computer but it looks completely diferent in another one. :annoyed:

Book
I don't know about rerecording the voices. I like the girls a lot, I agree with the father not been up to the same level. But I also think the fact that people tend not to like the father(and his voice) is something which helps the story.

ok its late... I need some sleep

So many people see such a resemblance with Tim burtons style. Honestly it is not that evident to me :o I wonder why...

The water effect was a combination of Realflow (fluid system by nextlimit) and Shake.
Maya was just used to render the mesh with a shader using a simple facing forward node.
This was latter used in post (shake) to create the final look.
I'll probably post the "how to" on my site soon!

yes you are right, a collaborative project may proved very amazing. Not that I have the time lately, but it sounds like a good idea.

I love it (can't think of anyone that wouldn't). More specifically I love the animated frame, the part where the frame comes down to the father saying "stop" is amazing and highlights the moment perfectly! I am wondering if Bobo's eyes were designed to be swirly to match the candy swirls or if it was happy coincidence. At first I though that the voice acting needed some improvement but after watching it a couple of times it grew on me and I like it now.

again, awsome work!

I just wanted to second everyone's positive comments on here and say this short is absolutely brilliant!!! So beautiful in color and design and story.

Really, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Like many have also said, I like the idea of using the black bars as a storytelling element. Would you accept a little idea (or two) for a tweak on the ending that came to me? (I feel funny even suggesting anything to such a wonderful animation!)

Perhaps one final touch that would also use the black bars could be, instead of a fade out to black at the end, the black bars could grow (top down & bottom up), slamming shut in the middle. Both symbolizing the father's final say in the matter, locking Bogo up in the black void of nothingness or reality crushing in. Also could symbolize the girl's eyelids closing shut!

Then...this would be totally depending on the end feeling you want to give the viewer...of course, it's now kind of a sad and depressing ending for Bogo. If you wanted to sneak in a glimmer of hope (awwww)...we could hear the Daddy click off the light and say "Sweet dreams" and shut the door. Then the black bars could open up a crack again with Bogo sticking his head out. The girl repeats, whispering, "Sweet dreams, Bogo!" and the bars gently close again as he waves goodbye, knowing that it won't be long and he'll be having more adventures in the little girl's dreams.

I know, again, that's changing the whole tone of the ending, so feel free to tell me where I can stick it :surprised :scream: or "How dare you even...!" :D Anyway, I guess my own imagination was inspired there. :lightbulb Sorry if I come off like the film is lacking or I know better your intentions...nuh uh!!!

OK, enough smilies for now? OK. :shame:

nice comment, it slipt my mind. Probably if i would've heard this before I would 've done it. The only problem i see is that it would resemble too much like "its no the end of the world" animation by Duran Duboi (awesome piece by the way)
