View Full Version : character: kali (... & a question)
ill_logic 04-22-2003, 05:48 PM hey there all...
i had a quick question. i started this model early yesterday (http://kurocrash.tripod.com/kali42103.html ... sorry tripod doesn't allow image hosting because they're jerks) & now, it's to the point where i'd like to start putting clothes on her. i started making separate objects to act as clothes but it was a royal pain in the ass to get them to fit around her form & i don't know how well it's going to work when i rig & try to pose her, not to mention it's not too optimized poly-wise. i tried deleting the faces you wouldn't see & combined everything but that looked pretty crappy.
i'd really like to just build the clothes out of the already existing geometry, but i don't know how i'd be able to do it... especially with her dress. any suggestions? any help is greatly appreciated.

ps- the regular crit&comments are always welcome too.

I think the formatting of your first post didn't help, if you're one of those who scans through just looking for shiny pictures, may not even notice the URL at all. Try having it on a line by itself..just a thought.
Model looks cool either way though..I dig the punkish aspect and big boots.
The unclothed version has some oddities to it, but doesn't matter.
As far as making clothes built in, seems like a really tall order for the dress..looks like it'd work fine with the shirt since it's form fitting and especially sleeveless, but you definitely need the dress to flow and be seperate. Poly wise doesn't look that high so far, I'm all for building clothes seperately in a 'modern' situation, unless there's a real ram crunch or it's for realtime, it always adds a nice bit of realism.
Depending on what app you're using, you may be able to do cloth sim, or just set up extra bones in order to move the dress and loose pieces of clothing around, etc. Otherwise again depending on which app, you just have to make sure in the rig that you set up your bone influences (weights, whatever paradigm) and such so that it all deforms like it should. Maybe check in the app specific forums or the rigging forum for tips on that kind of stuff.
Hope that made sense and was helpful, or one of the two :D

sorry, i would usually wait, but i needed the advice sooner than later so thus the impatience... and i know a direct picture would help, but i can't use tripod as a place to host images (cuz 'tripod is jerks'), and if i uploaded the pic with the 20kb limit, it wouldn't be 'shiny' lol so i figured this was my best bet. i know it leads to less responses, but i figured someone'd be nice & take the time to click the link! thanks for being so nice! lol and sorry for the impatience.
anyway...
i'm using maya & my low poly mesh is coming in at just under 5k at the moment, but i was just aiming to keep this mesh around 30k, just as a sort of a range to shoot for. i've played with maya cloth before with another model it looked ok, but no matter how much i played with the options, i couldn't get the amount of detail i wanted. that's why i'm going the modeling route this time. i was thinking about set driven keys that drive blend shapes to move wrinkles but that's a bit less immediate. i just didn't know if i should keep the actually leg geometry and where to cut it off. so you're saying keep all of it... ok. i'll give it a whirl lol
oh, & originally, i was planning on giving her an unzipped hoody but i definitely wasn't sure on how to go about whipping that up. i was just going to nix the idea actually. any suggestions on that?
an just for future knowledge... where are you seeing these oddities on the nude body... so i can remedy them next time. it's kinda tough seeing how i've been looking at this screen for so long & no one around me is able to give me good anatomy advice. i did try to use a reference with this one.
damn that's a lot of text... oh well thanks!

ok... here's an update:
http://kurocrash.tripod.com/kali42103.html
the top two images are the new ones. i created a new tanktop out of her geometry and i started working on the hair. it's not as bushy as in the reference picture i scribbled up... but i don't know how well i'd be able to manage something that crazy when wrangling uv's & such... i'm still working on the front where the bangs are.
thoughts? comments?

and a pic if it means that much to you guys lol :D
i've been trying to play a bit with the hair and the dress... i was having problems with her necklace (getting it to loop thru the dogtags and such... ) but i'm still pretty happy with it. i also started work on the hoodie, but i'm still sort of plotting out how to do the actual hood so that may take me a while... any thoughts?

fur eh...?
dang! once again, i was trying to go with modeling as opposed to plugins and stuff. see... i had a bad experience with fur. i think if i just higher the res of the hair a bit it may look a bit better. that & the ponytail's way too symmetrical, but since i'm modeling half of her, i was going to wait until after i got done to make asymmetric details.
lol but maybe... just maybe, seeing how far i get. i've got new sticks of ram that may help speed things up just a lil bit lol i'll give fur another go... but how would i get it to go back into a ponytail/bun/mass of hair like that?
oh well, thanks!

some more updates:
http://kurocrash.tripod.com/kali42103.html
i put the hoodie on her, but i'm not entirely sure about it. i also included an old character sketch i did. she's wearing different stuff but you might get a better idea of what i'm going for.

Good work man :applause:
I like your style and the hair is fine by me... but the lower belt seems to be hanging in the air or something!
This will rock with better lighting and textures :airguitar

wow! thanks for the compliments...
i'm going to ad a bit more detail to the hair. the more i work on it though, i think later on i wanna try fur again... problem is, i still don't know what i'm doing or how it's going to end up...
as for the belt: it's left hanging because i only put it there as a place holder... i was going to ad some more detail to it, like the one in the sketch ( which, yes, i know it's hanging off the wrong hip, but i like it better on the left one anyhow:D ) but i wasn't going to 'lay' the belt on her correctly until after i added that detail in. but thanks... just going to work on a few more minute details and them i'm going to uv wrap her... which... yeah... should be tons of fun! :annoyed: lol
oh well! off to work i go! lol later & thanks!

I'm not a perv but I think she'll look more "normal" in a shorter skirt/pants (thigh-length?). At the moment she looks kinda nerdy. Tank tops and long dresses AND boots(?!), hmm.
Or you're trying to avoid modelling the legs. J/k!! :p
ill_logic
04-24-2003, 06:52 PM
heh... she's got legs, did you check the link? they're not too detailed because of the skirt covering them, but they're there.
her clothes are intentionally supposed to mix/match. i created this character a long time ago for a final fantasy-esque story i've been working on. think ff8 with lots of samurai, hiphop, & emo overtones... that'll get you pretty close to the general concept lol her outfit's not supposed to look too normal, just a bit different than what a real girl would wear. and story wise she sort of has a reason for wearing longer skirts. anyway, that's how i ended up with the weird punkish nerdy style for her.
i have a new hi res pic up now with the hoodie and the belt more attached to the body. check it out:

thanks for the comments

Hey, she's looking cool..dig the hair..I agree more of it would be nicer though..or smaller pieces forming the 'bunch'. Some smaller ones mixed in to get more of the effect you have in the sketches.
I really like the color concept sketch..the moebius arm sleeve thingies are sweet. I think you should make the second belt more like it is in that sketch also, more flavour that way. I'm all for the styles you're going for, I like normal abnormal girls :D
btw the body weirdness from way back a few posts ago I was referring to was the abdomen, very squared off there, seems like there's a solid plank running down from her breasts. Same for the neck sort of, though that doesn't seem to be evident in the later renders..
Also as far as diverging from the concept sketch a little I think I liked the 'looser' look for the shirt..right now seems kinda glued-on. Also riding lower towards the belts would make it -more- like the sketch, and give a softer feel. I think that along with the hard stomach and shiny surface are making it feel like a piece of armor or a bodice/corset. But that's just IMO. :)
Keep 'em coming..are there going to be more characters as well later?

hey there,
okay, i loosened the sides of the tank top and the belt a bit... it could probably use a bit more, but i'm a bit pressed for time at the moment.
i put a few separate strands in for the bangs, and i was debating whether i should try that in the back too. as for the belt's details, i'm getting there lol one thing at a time. and the shaders on there right now are temporary, so her tank top's not going to be that shiny... it's just sharing the same shader as the whites of her eyes atm.
i know what you mean with the plank body now. that's easy to fix next time.
there are other characters for this story, 4 other main characters that are definite, a few others i'm trying to rework a bit. i really would like to model them, but i don't know how much of a chance i'm going to get coming up soon. i was planning on doing some environments & backgrounds. but we'll see...
here's a wireframe... i'll post a better resolution pic on that page when i get a bit more time.
peace!

Hey, good model! I really like the concept sketches! The arms look wonderfull! The style of the clothes is looking pretty good! The head needs some work, the ears are very anatomically incorrect! Even though it's sortof anime style you should work on those ears. The nose looks cool, very cute! On the eyes you could add in the eyefold, and also some eyelashes. The corners of the mouth are not quite right, there is actually a dip there, check out some lips, and you'll most likely notice what you d id wrong. I love the style of the hair! Can't wait to see this thing finished! Keep it up!

excellent! :D
i was looking for someone to knitpick it. though i wish you would've been more specific about what you saw wrong with the ear & lips. see, ear modeling's been the bane of my existence. i did a really good one a couple months back specifically so that i could just reshape & reuse it on different models, but i did that at school with maya 4.5, which i don't have here so fat lotta good that did me. the ear i had on her was more of an ear for ears' sake. i reshaped it a bit, but as with the lips, the main problem is the way the geometry falls on my base mesh.
as for the lips, i'm not sure, but if you're talking about what i think you're talking about, that's more of a trait. some people have it some don't, depending on the way they're cheek muscle curves out to the side of the face. i tried tweaking the model because the way it looked was still kind of funky anyhow, but now i'm getting a pinch instead of a dip... so i'm off to work on that now
there's a new image of the face tweaks up at:
http://kurocrash.tripod.com/kali42103.html
i've been noticing bandwidth problems ( cuz 'tripod is jerks' ), so i'll try & fix that later on today by getting rid of some of the older images with the next update.
thanks

hey all...
took the day off yesterday lol
here's a new shot though, i started working on the belt's detail now. i still have to fix the way the buckle sits on the top belt, but hopefully i'll have that looking ok by the end of the day. then just a few other details i would really like to straighten out. i'll add more after i uv map, & i wanna start doing that either tonight or first thing tomorrow.
tell me what you think!
