I posted this on the Nvidia forums but thought I might get some response from Gelato useres on CGTalk

ok, a Nooob user trying Gelato for the first time...

I came across 2 issues while trying Gelato in a real scene for the first time.

1-Is there an equivalent in "Mango" to the "cast shadow" option in the render stats??
or is there a work around to disable shadow casting for some objects??

2-Is there a way to perform shadow linking?? I've read in the shader documentation that I can type in a reflection trace set name in the "shadowname" attribute of a custom shader to perform shadow linking?? but how can I perform shadow linking with shadow maps??

I tried placing a camera in the same place as the light and rendered a separate render layer for it.... hidden the objects I don't want to cast shadows. moved the file to the right directory... changed the file into .tx using maketx from the command line.. and that did work.. although the shadow wasn't projected correctly... probably I needed to flip the image or match the cone angle correctly.... this just seems like a lot of work to get the shadow map to "ignore" some objects. I bet there's a simple work around!!

BTW, I'm wondering if anyone would recommend another "REYES" based renderer other than Gelato, for a learning user. I tried 3Delight wich seems to be more powerful but user friendly (at least as Gelato). I'm interested mostly in lighting not shader wrighting (at least not yet)
Just trying to get hold of what Lighting/Rendering techniques would be "Good practice" with a REYES renderer.

thanks in advance...
