hi all, I started doing bits on this a couple of days ago, it was going to be the driver for the dustbuggy, but I think I over did it with the detail compared to the buggy,it looks kind of odd next standing next to it, so he'll be in some sort of sci-fi scene instead, I'll post updates as I do em :)

squid i am starting to think you really are a squid with all those arms.

nice pic bud.

its the lean mean purple modeling machine.

Looks Really good!!! is this just box modeling with hypernurbs applied? I agree that it doesn't fit your buggy. How bout making a cartoony driver instead of a robot?

Squid bud this is again an excellent looking piece, you and your bots :p but seriously I wanted to bug ya about the lighting setups you use, and this looks as good a time as any to ask about this one ;) And oh would it be too much trouble to write up a short tutorial on the Wire-shader effect you acheive in that animation you did? I'll like to use that effect in my showreel. C4D is pretty damn cool :)

very simple lighting on this one, one white light towards the back right of the scene, brightness 200%. one white light above ,brightness is default so that'd be 100%, and one dark blue light in front of the model, brightness 100%

all lights have soft shadow enabled, shadow map size 1000. so its basically just 3 point lighting with variations here and there depending on the size and detail of the object, the bright light at the back is something I always have in my images, I guess that would be called rim lighting, it just brings out the edges of the models with nice white highlights :)

if you want the cool wire effect you'll have to buy the wireshader from here http://www.tools4d.com. I'll post a quick tutorial this week sometime on animating using gradients

oooo...do I dare critique squid's work? OK, I do. I was just looking at it again and I noticed that the finger's don't look very functional as they are modeled right now. Does that make sense? Maybe a little more mechanical looking would be nice.

Ok, that's all I've got.

Squid,

You're still kicking some can and taking names! Nice work! :)

I have to agree with dano in terms of the fingers. I look at the major joints (which look AWESOME) then I see the fingers. They look a little stiff in comparison (what's that word my modern art teacher taugh me? - Masonic rectification!). ;)

Also, the wrists have a very nice meaty bolt holding them in place. But the shoulders get a cheap rivet? :D

Very nice look you have going! You have your own "squiddy" style that's for sure. I can't wait to see the movie! Even if it's just a robot parade! :airguitar

here it is with some legs, not sure about them though, I might look at re-doing them ( I modified the hands a little aswell )

yea the legs work great, but im thinking with the whole body relatively "chunky", should the upper arms be that thin?
And yea it doesnt look like he can hold much, its gotta have one tight damn grip to hold a pole, unless there is like a small thumb like claw on the other side...

marcom

arghh... you blow me away... way to cool.

i was just thinking if instead of a head you should add a dwarf piloting the robot.. :)

Really nice stuff. I would reduce the size of the lower legs a bit, to bring it inline with the forearms and hands. Nice lighting/texturing aswell.

I agree, they are a little thin, but initially I was going for a cartoony style with exaggerated proportions, but now I'll probably use this bot for a more serious looking scene ( sword, small eyes, dramatic pose, looking scary :) )
so I'll probably beef up his arms a little, and yeah he needs an opposable thumb to grab stuff with

hmm, dunno about that, I think the body is all wrong for that kind of construction, I was thinking of quite a sharp looking head, with piercing eyes ( slanted very thin, evil looking ), I'm not sure what the final image will look like yet, but I want to make something like a robot ninja with glowing eyes in a darkened environment, dunno whether that original or not, probably not... I promise I'll keep off the robots for a while after this one :D

Hello there,

:bounce:

Very good modeling with a great design. I like the wat it is created. Simple enough i could say but maybe harder to model :p
Good lighting there to show us the model correctly. Are you using advanced render?

squidinc
04-23-2003, 01:48 PM
nope, its just 4 or 5 omni lights

That’s really cool I think it has quite a bit of character to it... I guess I could praise it a lot more, but I think everyone else is going to or already has :). So I have a question, for the top part of the leg what primitive did you model off from? I'm asking because Im trying to do something similar to the top part of the leg, but with the oil tank the curves aren’t going the right way.

Looks really good so far. The head looks great but not evil like you were originally planning. I dunno if you scratched that idea or what but just tellin ya. Models always look incredibly better with textures and yours squid looks good anyway lol.:applause:  :buttrock:

how do you go about texturing the battle damage (what shader in what Channel)? The model looks great. I agree the head doesn't look evil like your originally planned but it still looks good.:)

almost all of the body parts are box modelled and then put inside hypernurbs, there a few cylinders but they're just knee joints, eye sockets, etc

the texture is normally something like this
C4d file here (http://www.m1k3.com/cgremote/damage.c4d) (right click, save target as)

Oh no! I'm going to crit one of Squids models. Please don't kill me!

I don't like the seconed head. The first was better, but I agree it did look cartoony. Maybe something more along the lines of the first head but with less toon.

hmm I dunno, I think I want to stear clear of the normal two eyed robot, I don't really want to make something with character, more of a cold machine, I'm not keen on that round head either, its looks like some sort of daft helmet, I'm not done yet though so stay tuned

excellent as usual, just one observation... those hands would never be able to pick anything up without some sort of thumb mechanism.

still playing around with the robot, ( i'm not really sure what to do with it now thats its finished)

wow thats looks great but if you want to make him a little more evil looking maybe a weapon, and i hate to say it too but i like the first head, although it looks less evil then the second

ndat
04-28-2003, 12:33 AM
Oh dear lord :surprised, and you said you lost your mind when you made those dragons. Or perhaps you did, glad to see your back in time to make this one a truly disturbing creation.

Just to get my word in, I think I like this second head A LOT better than the first. Its just so much more cold and dark, it feels like it fits with the body better. I also don’t think a weapon would be needed to brutally tear apart a sumo wrestler, in fact it may be more fun without one.

I figured out how to do that upper leg piece with an oil tank, and am fairly happy with the results. Yeah Im pretty much copying you for a modeling exercise, but as things go yours is like 20 times better and more polished than mine.

Well nice work, if your done Id post it in the finished works section it would get plugged for sure :).

dunno yet, I don't think I'm done with the gore  and the environment, and come to think of it I'm not sure about the pose either

ndat
04-28-2003, 01:15 AM
Yeah to me the pose kind of makes it look like hes sorry for what he has done. It makes it kind of dynamic, but I dont think that is what you were going for.

Well, words fail me. I'm amazed by your work, but I don't always chime in because you can only say "DUDE!!" so many times. :)

I love the use of atmospherics in this pic. Maybe it would look cool to have the headlights shining subtle volumetric cones towards the camera? Not right at it, but shining to a spot above/right.

cool, I'll try that on the next one, the floor looks kind of stupid :banghead: and theres not nearly enough identifiable internal organs, lol :D.
I was thinking of changing the pose of the arms so they are held in front of him with stuff dripping through his fingers, similar arm pose to an image earlier in this thread

Actually, It kind of looks like my computer :buttrock:

I LOVE this model, and i love this texturing job. How on earth do you do it? Its amazing mate. Well, this has turned out fn great, i love it. Keep producing these killer bots

I will probably make myself the most unpopular person on the forum for this suggestion, but I'm not convinced that the head is quite right for the body. Also, if someone sneaks up behind with some bolt cutters, those antennae could be a serious weak point (comparable with the technique of disabling daleks with a bit of blue-tack over the eyehole). Anyway here are my thoughts on a possible head/helmet type thing.

squidinc
04-28-2003, 12:48 PM
thanks for the visuals  but to be honest, I'm not keen on that idea at all, I want to avoid a round head altogether, and with the aerials, this guys isn't meant to be a military machine or used to being attacked, he's just a psycho thats had a bit of a software failure :p

Fabulous work once again squid, only one suggestion: I don't see the robot as a dangerous psycho, more like a robotic buzz lightyear, he still looks too cute to me....(ducks for cover)
And since I don't have any good advice on what he should look like.....I'd better shutup then. :p

Keep it up
