Title: Le Masque (The Mask)
Name: Gracie Rafferty
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

This was an extremely time consuming painting for me! It was based on a photograph from WinterWolf Studios, used with permission.

The reference is available for viewing here: http://www.myntifresh.com/deviantART/lemasque/masqueref.jpg

WinterWolf Studios is here: http://www.winterwolfstudios.com/

Technical Information:
Painted mostly in Painter, with some detail work done in Photoshop.
Wacom Intuos 3 6x8" tablet
114 hours.

Project Background:
This painting was originally done for a contest hosted by Winter and Wolf earlier this year; but I submitted a WIP because I simply ran out of time. I had clocked 79 hours on it, and I was still placed second in the contest, but I wasn't really satisfied with the result, and so continued to work on it even after the contest was finished.

Inspiration:
When I saw the photo, I immediately thought of a ballroom atmosphere, her gaze looked so mysterious, like she is holding a secret, so I chose to place her in a lamp lit space or corridor, with a painting behind her to include some luxury and texture. It was really difficult to paint the frame! I also took careful note of colors, and added the peacock feathers as both a compositional device and also as an additional extravagance.

This piece is meant to recall the times of mystery and intrigue, where any little corner might perhaps become a secret meeting place. Is it a lover she is meeting? Or perhaps a plot thickens... You can decide!

Some details are available here:

I would appreciate any thoughts or criticism you so desire to write me, so I can learn and grow and apply new techniques to my future work. But, for now, I think I can call this piece complete and most likely won't return to it unless someone makes a compelling case for revision!

Lovely colors! Couple of things you might wanna keep an eye on: lightsource and composition.

From the shadow cast by the mask, it would seem your lightsource is quite high and to the viewer's right (slightly), which might not cast a shadow back on the painting. Just something to think about!

And you've kinda sliced your painting in half: the girl on one side and the painting on the other. It makes my eye drift right to that light spot under the peacock feathers, like you're shining a flashlight there. I'm also not quite convinced of the perspective on the painting; that might have something to do with it.

Hope you don't mind the critique! It's still a lovely portrait.

I don't mind the critique :)

I think you're right about the painting sliced in half.. I did a last-ditch with the peacock feather to try to tie the two portions in half.. Hehe, it didn't work! I should probably refigure the background, but I think I should just move on from this beast of a painting.. I have so many sitting on my harddisk wanting completion :)

however, about the shadows.. I was under the impression from the reference that the light was coming from the right, but not so high. Maybe only a little above her head? It gave me the impression of lamplight.. which is why I placed her in a hallway. If you look at the little patch of light coming through her chin/shoulder area and casting on her neck, it appears to me as if the light is just slightly above her, which is why I placed the shadow on the painting in a painting where it is. The background is fictional, so I could be wrong, but other places on her indicate the lighting on the reference photograph: the cast shadow of the mask on her hands, the slight shine in her hair, the lightest areas of her face and the mask.. all point towards an angled light source, mostly to the right. These photographers use studio lights most of the time... it is probably one of those, although that's an assumption :)

I'm not sure about the perspective on the painting, it could be a problem... I mostly used guides in photoshop for the lines, and tried to figure a vanishing point - but perspective is something I'm studying now. This was my first attempt to really try for something like that :P I'm mostly a portraiture artist.

Anyhow I'm curious about your light idea, and would like to hear more if I'm off!

Cheers!
Gracie

I'm horrible with perspective...I can't do it to save my life, but I know when something doesn't look right. Isn't that terribly unhelpful of me? :scream: I'd tear that painting out of there and just focus on the face. Though the peacock feather is rather nice! Oooh! Flip the feathers to drape across the top of her head, springing from the flower. It'll make for a nice circular composition. But I certainly relate to moving on to other projects. I should be working now... *tip toes off!*

Haha, I will poke a few buddies of mine to see about the painting perspective.. Now, looking at this less than a month after completing it, I think perhaps I don't like the painting very much at all. Isn't that terrible? Hahaha. I already have 10 other unfinished but worked out paintings on my harddisk, I think I'll just abandon this one and keep on working to improve for my next ones. I think the reason I don't like this one much is because it's only got two planes going on, not enough depth. And the down the middle issue is really terrible.... Ah well.
