View Full Version : Basic problem: smooth shift / array

Hi guys,

I'm used to using Extrude and the like, but upon re-reading one of Arndt's books, I stumbled across two functions: smooth shift and array.

(a) The manual "explains" the difference between Smooth Shift and Extrude, and when applied I see the difference, but I don't understand it. Any idea where I could find some extra info?

(b) Array works perfectly with polygons, but not with objects. There's a duplicate function, but this doesn't operate in the same way as Array. Is there a plugin that can bridge this "gap"?

Cheers,
BaRa

to my knowledge the diffrence between smooth shift and exrude is this.

smooth shift generates polys when you extrude outward to make one smooth bump that has no edges more than 90 degrees. extrude doesnt care what the angles of the polys is it just makes one poly and moves it along its normal.

here is a pic that demonstrates the diffrence pretty clearly.

Hi JIII,

Thanks for replying. To recap:

(1) extrude command just extrudes, whatever the angular relationship between the surfaces. The angle in the active tool settings is just there to preserve groups.

(2) smooth shift evaluates the angle in the active tool manager, and produces a "smooth" extrude with potentially lots of extra polygons if the angle setting forces it do to so.

Hmm... your explanation was better ... but at least I understand it. Thanks :-)

not entirely it all depends on the angle.

here is a pic of extrude with the angle set to 180.

the diffrence between smooth shift and extrude is this.

Extrude adds no polys. Smooth shift does.
