I always found shading with pencil ligtly instead of smudging gives you greater control. Although it taakes 10 times longer, but the end result is also 10 times better. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the reply, I tried shading using cross-hatching for a while but couldnt get any decent results. Then I found this page

Well I m not talking about cross hatching, I use a simple method of shading as I would color. I run over the same area lightly over and over until I get the result I m going for. This method takes a lot of time but the lighting comes out great on my work, so I stick to that.
