View Full Version : Modeling a turbine
UberModeler 04-22-2003, 05:53 AM here is an example of a turbine done in lightwave that i think is awesome..the whole thread is a treat to look at.

i need to make a turbine as well and i was wondering how he did the blade part(the part that spins). I tried to use an array but it seems like there would be too many problems.
is this the right approach or is there a better methode that you can think of while using max? jsut though i would ask before i mess up a billion times :P

Why not an array? What kind of problems?
Or, shift-rotate one blade and up the instances by the correct amount. Correct meaning you want to go all the way around, so that's 360 degrees. If you rotate one blade four degrees you'll need 90 instances (or, uh, 89?, because you don't want to overlap the first one.. bah, minor detail).
You can then attach them all to one single mesh for exact tiny detail-work if neccessary.. I mean, I don't know how those blades are attached to the middle part, it's obviously something that should be taken care of somehow..
Problems? What kind of problems? The array tool should still be the best solution. Just create a blade, allign it to the center cone and use the array-tool to generate the other blades.
Did a quick test and works fine :/

ok ill mess with it some more.
so the blades arnt accually connected to the cone Smay?
thanks for the help.

thats a good method. However, Swirly chicken did it another way which is also really easy (I asked him). He made a cylinder with lots of sides and extruded the sides (local normal). Just play with twist modifier and bevel and it turns out really nice.
Jepp, the blades arenīt connected to the cone. if you need a smooth connection I would do it like celticdog said and add some MSmooth :P.
To speed up the work you can use the array-tool too. Modified my turbine a bit (well, have to admit, my center core has way too many segments for using MSmooth. Just was too lazy to generate a new one ^^)
