View Full Version : Dual Problems with max
SyDemon 04-22-2003, 04:25 AM Problem 1:
I recently wrongly installed the service pack, only to realise that it's meant for systems with a graphics card that supports directx 9 (or something like that).
This caused some pixel shader error in max whenever I tried opening any max file, saying that it can't be loaded.
I consulted the site and followed the uninstallation procedure.
Now when I relaunched max, I can load up max files but the selection tools are acting funny.
When I have the selection tool or the move tool active, the cursor does not change to the reticle when I mouse over objects, this means I cannot select objects by mouse clicking on them but only though the selection floater. Is there some setting that I can check about this?
Problem 2:
There this mesh that I got from a friend, we're working on a project right now. I believe the mesh is exported from poser.
The problem is, the mesh is very messy and heavy, as such:
See here (http://c.1asphost.com/SyDemon/Pictures/Misc/HeavyMesh.jpg)
Is there any way to salvage the mesh?
Any help is appreciated.

about the 1st problem,
When I have problems with max I can't solve by other means, I usually try a reinstall after backing up my work (if possible; uninstall preserves this stuff anyways), I would bet that with a clean install, it'll work again.
about the second, it looks like the mesh was fairly light at first as you can see nice rows of poly's flowing along the contours. It seems the program that exported the file added a bunch of unecessary tiny poly's within each of the orgional big poly...I would start with optimize modifier, and change the threshold value, until it just starts breaking down that nice origional mesh, back off the threshold to where the origional mesh is still being preserved (or at least as much is possible).
That should get you about half to three quarters there, after that you will probably have to manually clean up the rest with target welding of vertices.

For first problem:
I was hoping that I don't need to reinstall everything :p cos it's more work.
But I guess it's the best solution.
For the second problem:
Thank you for your advice I will try it. I would like to know how the optimize modifier works though. What are the conditions at which they will remove vertices and edges?
I have hardly used that modifier and when I did I don't tinker with it, so I just want to know its rules to understand it better.
Thank you for your advice.

You could also use the MultiRes modifier for bringing down the amount of poly's:thumbsup:

Just try the Optimizer and tinker, that's honestly the best way I can think of figuring out how it works. It's not like it does anything permanent to the mesh.
Same goes for the modifier "MultiRes", it's a bit more modern than the Optimizer, but also has some more strict rules about the underlying mesh for it to work.
Anyway, I doubt you'll ever get anything super-nice out of it.. maybe you can, maybe I'm just uncomfortable with not having placed each vert, but I would go for a rebuild of it. Freeze the ugly mesh, and start making a new one to match it..
Just my take on it :)

Alright now I cannot even uninstall max at all. When I click on the "next" to proceed with uninstallation, the cursor changes to the hour glass (I'm using win98) and after about 10 secs of loading it will stop responding. This is the same for trying to repair....
I'm at a loss, I do not wish to format my harddrive. Anything I can do here?

The optimize modifier is not very good. I suggest downloading the demo of 'Polycruncher' which does a much better job. I believe the demo has 30 days of full functionality or something.

You don't necessarily have to uninstall before a reinstall, try to reinstall max over your current program.
I usually don't uninstall before I reinstall but if a problem REMAINS after a reinstall then I go ahead and uninstall the program completely, and reinstall a second time.
