I've written a script hopefully someone takes interest in.

Download the script : http://scripts.subd.nl/?f=JHN_SwitchSelectByName.ms

Run it from anywhere, and go to your customize UI / JHN's Tools, and assign a hotkey or like I did make it a menu item in the tools dropdown.

Activating the option switches the scene explorer to the select by name dialog or vice versa on the fly.
