View Full Version : Matte Wars Footage Comments (Filming Begins Next Week)

I will be traveling to the Caribbean region next week and I want to record some RAW footage for future challenges.

I just need to know WHAT you guys would like to play with?
Castles? Empty Beaches?

I will be raoming the islands with my trusty Cannon HV20 camera and I want to record some clean HD plates for future challenges.

Keep in mind that I will not have a steady cam rig right now, but I have the ability to provide camera tracking info with the clips.

But mos of the shots can be done with a locked camera If requested.


The plates I will record will be CLEAN plates with no people on them,d epending on how popular these challenges are I might do fottage with actors here in the DC/ NY area.

Well guys, here is an update.
I have started filming some plate footage for future challenges.
Since I don’t own a steady cam I will stabilize some of the raw clips in post the image later. Also we had some issues with the lenses, so I will re-film some stuff soon.



Anyway, I will be recording more, in different environments soon.





Anyway I would love to hear your opinion of the progress of this endeavor so far.

The fort/castle shots would be handy for those without access to dedicated camera tracking software; the straight-ish lines would give people something to work with. I think a shortened version of tmp4 where you have a lot of movement 'into' the frame, as opposed to a rotating around a point, would be a good starting point for those wanting to do something broader than a matte/establishing scene style shot.

Tmp5 would make a good 'still into animated' matte. With the 1920x1080 footage, participants could put in a bit of movement - slight pan, push in etc. Was it filmed progressive or interlaced?

This is a great idea. Good on ya for taking time to do this. I think you should post this in the matte painting forum here on cgtalk. I am sure you will get a lot of ideas from the regulars their :D

Wow, thats awesome to take time out to do this R. HV20 is not a very good camera for matchmoving, or so im told anyways. There was a thread on ssontech about "Say no to CMOS", unfortunatly they have moved forums, so I dont have an exact URL for that thread. Personally I dont have enough experence in that subject, but It was a thread I was specifically told to read and take note of. Just thought it might be relivant thats all :)

Kudos to what you are doing, thats awesome and unselfish. :)

The HV20 is a decent camera, but the quality will be ok for what I want to do here.

I am trying to steer the forum more and more into storytelling and the way I see it this is the best way to do it.
Anywa, I will be soon be filming plates in DC, NewYork and the Virginia Mountains. So if you have any ideas, please do drop them.

Personally, I like city scapes and forests along with water. I am still learning the ins and outs but I think this will be an awesome thread.
