View Full Version : "Set key" acting buggy...

I'm experiencing a weird phenomenon on the computers at my workplace...(not at home, however)

When using the SET KEY feature in Max 5.1, upon setting a new key (on any parameter--transforms, modifiers, etc.) some or all of my Editable Poly objects seem to 'collapse', for lack of a better word. In other words, as soon as I hit the big KEY button, models (even ones NOT being touched or keyed) will have vertices disappear or collapse into 1 vertex. I'm not at work, but when I am, perhaps I'll post a screenshot.

What's worse is that UNDO won't correct the disfigurement.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and/or found a solution or reason for this extremely frustrating problem.

--using HP machines with 1ghz(or so) PentiumIII... 512mb Ram, Nvidia Quadro...

any insight is appreciated...

Howdy !

Have you checked that your object is still untouched by rendering an quick test ? I mean, it could be a display error ? I get that funky error once i a while that an object all of a sudden kind of looks like spikes or something that would have collapsed in the middle, and it's a display problem, fixed by installing fresh drivers.

Hm, yikes.. I don't have much experience using the Key mode (more comfortable with the classic auto-key Animate-mode-turned-on thing).. does it work if you use auto-key mode at least?

Anyway, I wanted to say that I get hit by the collapsed-to-one-vert problem from time to time when I've used certain modifiers like Noise and Bend and such in a scene, and I go to load the scene again. I have to re-make the offending modifiers when that happens.

Does that ring a bell? I'm wondering if perhaps the two prolems are interconnected somehow.. at least it sounds like the same symptom, just different triggers..

This is a documented bug that popped up in the 5.1 update. I use set key a lot myself, and was a little miffed that it started to happen. Here are some work arounds though.

1) Make sure that no subobjects are selected. (This can be a pain in the butt if you have a lot of objects in the scene.)

2) The easiest thing to do is apply a key (using setkey) at frame 0 for every object. (espicially the ones collapsing)

Like I said it's been reported and documented by Discreet. Hope the above tips help. :)

Thanks for the input everyone...

Taoizm, I'm glad to hear that it's at least a "known" issue...
(I should have checked the discreet forums)

Anyway, I'll try the tips you gave me when I get a chance.

you all rock.:buttrock:
