Hi there!

Nice sketchbook start.

Something to think about:

Values:
try to expand your value range in your work... go from almost black to almost white.
Squint your eyes to get a better overall overview on your values. When everything looks equally dark, it means you need to widen your value range. (eg the arm studies, the robots, the alien,...)

Form:
Use values to define form, not color. When painting, think about the form you are painting, if you paint an arm, make your strokes go around the form of the arm... as Glenn Vilppu says in his gesture DVD: Feel the form

Use hard edged brushes instead of smudging, airbrushes and the likes.
Edges from forms in the distance will be less defined than edges from forms nearby = depth

Draw from life as much as you can... use a pencil, ballpen, markers, charcoal, pastels and any other medium you can think of. Any surface will do (even your desk or the walls if you don't have anything else :) )

Draw draw draw and when your arm falls off... tape it back onto your body and continue drawing!

Hopefully, these remarks are motivating you :)
Have fun creating!

Hi

nice work.

All of your studies lack dark values. The darkest value they have is usually a darkish midtone.
Go darker for the core shadows ;)

You said (in answer to my previous post here, also about values) that you catch yourself going too dark or too light in value.
This is not the case, on the contrary.
Take the last portrait for example. Open both your study and the original in PS or Painter and then with the eyedropper (make sure you have your color sliders to HSV and not RGB) and go to the darkest spots in both images and read the "value" value.
You can go much further than you think you can... try it!

Good you work so hard, the results will appear. There are two things I would suggest: try to keep the eyelines more in volume, i.e. making the line to follow the 3d form and not to "slide": you can't usually have eyes on different levels, it's really rare. The second thing is lighting: watch how lighting in your references models form and makes it look 3d, try to follow lighting more closely.

NR43
08-17-2009, 07:31 AM
copy the parts you see that need repositioning on a new layer, then merge the new layers and paint over the forms until everything looks right.
If you're unsure or you want to be able to undo your changes at all times, wait with merging the new layer with your base layer and paint the corrections on the new layer.

When using this copy/paste/relocate technique, it is imperative that you have a good edge control. You must paint the surroundings of the area as if you are painting it for the first time, to absolutely avoid that copy/paste look I often see.
There is no cutback for that. Repainting the moved form so it fits into it's surrounding forms takes time, but it's still faster than having to start all over again...

you need to upload your image to a free photo host like www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us/) and when it is finished uploading, you will get html codes to paste into your message.

As for your protraiture, it is a problem of angle and proportional distortion. All artists suffer from this. To initially train your eyes and hand, drop a square grid on your ref photo and copy and use that correct your distortions. Better still start all over with the grid.

After a period of these grid copies, you will find that without the grid, your perception powers will have improved.

The technique is to be able to mentally (or physical measuring devices) superimpose vertical and horizontal lines to help you judge angles and proportional distances more accurately.

All classically trained artists will do this; using pencils, measuring sticks, a plumbline, a mentally projected lines/grid, etc. whatever works for you.

Regarding your latest piece, play with the composition a bit.
At first I thought it was a gargoile on the edge of a building but then I noticed it's supposed to be the main character in the scene. Maybe you can relocate it or flip the canvas horizontally and see what gives. Also, I would make it look more towards the viewer rather than away from him/her.

I suggest to make some studies of metallic objects to get rid of the wax appearance.

The background looks rather flat as well.
If you bring perspective into play, you'll get a far more interesting painting.

Looking forward to see your update.

heres my progress so far with jonathan rush' game charachter design workshop & well i think i blew a head gasket in that class its very enjoyable informative & I highly recomended it. i havent got to uv unwrap yet as i'm still in the modelling process learning both zbrush & 3dsmax together gave me alot more confidence with photoshop I havent got my head round the scaling issue yet, so if anyone has any clues about those matters.

Anyway Robert Chang class is pretty amazing, i highly recommend it for anybody starting out in PS or just traditional painting. Here is a before and after pics of what ive learned so far in the workshop.
