max 5.1 crashes in many places... but i have a problem that it doesn't let me apply a gradient ramp with diffuse... it actually lets me do that but after a few seconds it crashes to the desktop with no error msgs popping up. I especially noticed that whenever i start moving arrows in the gradient thing... changing colors, it does that... anyone have this problem? any suggestions?

in my experience, sudden closing of Max (ie, not really closing but the window just suddenly disappears and at random intervals) when you do certain things is a problem with your software liscence. This same error has been cropping up since max 3.1 for me.

I would try reinstalling the sentinel liscencing system (or reinstall max) and check to see that cdilla64 and cdilla10 are running processes when you start windows (alt+ctrl+Delete)---> task manager--->processes (arrange by image name and look for cdill64 and cdilla10)

I've also had problems making gradient ramps ocassionally that were unrelated to liscencing...could be something else.

I don't think, reinstalling the license system would do much good here... try switching viewport drivers (Software, OpenGL, Direct3D). How much RAM does your computer have? A minimal reccomendation for MAX 5.1 is 512 MB (The more the better) Also check the amount of virtual memory that is being used.

Make sure you are running at least Windows 2000. Also make sure you have installed the latest updates for your operating system.

Make sure you download the 5.1 update for max, if you are still using 5

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your motherboard and display adapter. Make sure they are stable/final and that they are not beta drivers or something like that.

make sure you update your system.

I had the *EXACT SAME* problem when I first started. Max would just shut down every 5 minutes or so, or whenever I tried to save, which was very frustrating.

About 45 minutes of updating my video drivers, and doing all of the windows updates FIXED all of this. Check to see if you're running the recent stuff.
