View Full Version : bezier handles on camera paths?
rob rhodes 12-19-2007, 10:45 AM I am struggling to consistantly get bezier handles on my camera paths in my viewports. Some of the keys have them and some dont, and i can't seem to get them to show up on the ones that dont. I have tried the buttons above the time line with no success. Can anyone help me?

What you need to do is select the key you want to work with. In the attribute manager deselect auto-tangent, and the tangent handles will apear.

Thanks I have tried that but it doesn't seem to make a difference. It is odd as the handles seem to come and go as I had to revert to the saved version as things i had changed on the path would not undo for some strange reason. So the reverted one had working handles but they disapeared after a little time and i can't get them back! I just started a new unrelated spline somewhere else and when i came back to the camera path the handles were gone. Very strange - is there a fail safe way to show these handles as they are a bit tempramental at the mo!

not temperamental, they just only show when the key is selected int he viewport NOT in the timeline of fcurve

I think that defines temperamental. :D
That particular lapse is something I've complained about three times to Maxon, not to mention making it something of a mantra here.
(By lapse I mean that when you select a position keyframes in the timeline or* the f-curve manager, it isn't selected in the viewport. This is slightly off topic. The bezier thing bugs me too, but lately I exclusively animate cams with SteadyCam (http://www.tcastudios.com/) and thereby avoid the problem.)

To be more clear on the bezier thing, in the f-curve manager, turning off 'Auto Tangents' isn't enough. You also have to move a bezier handle on the curve itself to take it off what used to be known as 'Flat' but which is now known as 'Zero Angle.' Then the beziers magically appear in the viewport.
To be more clear about the OT issue of why it's bad that you can't select position keyframes in the viewport by selecting them in the TL or F-CM, the problem is this: if your object is keyframed at frame 30, and if you're at frame 30 in the timeline, good luck selecting a bezier handle in the viewport. You'll select your object. You have to go forward or backward in the timeline to free up that keyframe to be selectable. That kinda sucks. Not an esoteric thing--this crops up all the time. But maybe there's some workaround (not including the Animation Tool) that I don't know about.

If you use the Animation Tool (animation mode) then you should be able to select the key in viewport regardless of where anything else is in scene.

If a point on the animation spline is being tricky I notice sometimes switching Auto Tangent on and off again gets the handle up. You can also switch off Auto Tangent in the custom interpolation settings so that the handles show up by default if using spline interpolation.

Its strange im trying to recreate the problem with a new scene and i can't just now!. As you can see auto tangent is off on my second screen grab and the point selected in the viewport but no tangents! (the point does glow yellow when hovered over but no tangents appear). But it works on a new fresh simple scene! Weird, maybe the scene/path is corrupted somehow. Its got a vraycam tag on it but that shouldn't make a difference i don't think.

Are you sure that one keyframe isin't set to Zero Angle/Length ?
