Title: Character Design: steam punk girl
Name: Gary Lai
Country: Canada
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Hello. It's been a long time.

This is a character I came up with the intention of creating a 3D model out of. I wanted a typical tough but pretty girl and a simple design (maybe too simple?). Right now I am unsure of a few parts, such as her armor and boots, so i may revise them at a later time. In any case, this was also a painting practice for myself to get back into drawing.

I had imagined her to be in some sort of future/PA desert setting, so steam or cyber punk may not be the best description. She could probably use a few more things to make the design a bit more interesting, like goggles and a weapon of some sorts, and again, I will probably add those at a later time. Her arm is not actually supposed to be a replacement arm but armor plating instead. The forearm is very large and simple and I had imagined her using it as a shield of sorts and also to punch with. I realise that I kinda drew the end of the arm a bit flat, doh!

Most of the work was done in Painter 9, spread over several nights... a few hours here and there. I used Photoshop for finishing touches and adjustments. Please let me hear your thoughts and thanks for looking.

Yeah, as you wrote it's hard to decide what she's meant to be: cyber- or steam-punk... I would vote the first one. Altough you give her a protective arm equipment, but somehow it doesn't fit entirelly to your character. As you also said, you should have to add more props and things to her. That will resolve the 'what punk?' riddle. The character itself reminds me some kind of manga-witchblade whatever... If you carry on in a futuristic way, you will make a cyber gal, but if you thinking around some kind of 'mechanical distortion' you mayhap make a steamy chick.
About the technique.
The flatness of the robo-arm is not disturbing at all, but if you add more contrast - expecially at her shoulder and elbow area, it probably made it better. I can't adjudge is her left arm is crooked? And there are two minor anatomy issue, the size of her right hand and the lenght of her legs are not the same... The right is shorter, i guess.
Anyway, i love the stile and colors. Look like my fav work of yours, the Pinup girl! I look fwd the further process of this work! Keep it up Bro!
