mwellsworth 12-18-2007, 05:12 PM Hello everyone, I've been a big fan of the CGTalk Forums for some time now. I always find myself looking through the site in awe of all the amazingly talented artists here. I've decided that I'd like to become a part of the community that I look up to as an artist and hope that my skills will improve over time. What better way to improve than by practicing... and that's why I've started this Anatomy Thread. Any comments or critiques are greatly appreciated and needed.

Welcome. Nice drawing. :) I recommend to everyone this great book:
The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/Artists-Complete-Guide-Figure-Drawing/dp/0823003035/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198013871&sr=1-1)
Check it out as well as his website, www.tonyryder.com
Keep practicing!

Thank you very much for the book recommendation and the kind words Rebeccak. I just recently picked up Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy (http://www.amazon.com/Dynamic-Anatomy-Expanded-Burne-Hogarth/dp/0823015521) since his work has been mentioned to me on several occasions. Not sure if I like it yet or not. It seems to be very good as far as musculature and dynamic poses. Here are some neck studies I did really quick last night from the book.

Just sketched these 10 minutes ago. I played around with value a lot more on these and feel like it improved the look of the figures a great deal. I already feel like I'm getting better.

Nice! Never underestimate the value of copying master works, even if they are comic masters. I recommend drawing from a number of sources. A full book list (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=202&t=257424) can be found in the References and Resources section of this forum.
Yep, as a student I did innumerable master copies and it took many years of studying on my own to feel comfortable drawing the figure. Time and patience, stock up! :)
Keep posting

@Roja: Thanks! I'm doing my best to keep up and practice everyday.
Here is a sketch I did today as a warm up before I continued to work on the portrait I mentioned earlier. I think it turned out okay.

@Deser: Thank you for the encouragement! I'm getting a lot of enjoyment out of posting my work here for others to comment and critique on.
@Rebeccak: I just wanted to thank you again for your book recommendation. I went out to the store and picked it up and just from looking through it breifly, it looks like a great resource.
Here is the portrait I've mentioned that I've been working on. I stayed up all last night working on it to have it done by Christmas. I'd say it took me anywhere from 8-12 hours to finish. It's a portrait of my wife's 10 year old sister. She's expressed an interest in my art and I thought she'd enjoy it if I drew a picture of her as a gift. What do you think?

Very nice! Will you have the opportunity to take a life drawing class? If so I'd highly recommend it. :)

@Rebeccak: Thank you. I've actually taken 1 year of fine art which included a Figure Drawing I course. That was about 4-5 years ago though. Since then I've been undecided on whether or not I should go back. I'm interested in becoming a 3D modeler/animator, but worry about whether an art related degree is necessary? I suppose that I'm worried financially that I wont have a fall back if I'm unable to make a career out of art.
Here is a portrait of Santa that I did on Christmas Eve since my 10 year old sister in law wanted to draw with me.

Here is an older sketch of a cat I drew on a boring day at work.

Hey, great work!
I just want to know if you have any books or sites where do you get this kind of studies?

@Milchschaumschluerfer: Thanks, all of the studies I've posted here are from Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and Expanded Edition (http://www.amazon.com/Dynamic-Anatomy-Expanded-Burne-Hogarth/dp/0823015521/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1198902485&sr=11-1). Burne Hogarth is an American cartoonist known for his books on anatomical reference. He has a website (http://www.burnehogarth.com/), but it doesn't seem to be up-to-date. You should look at the anatomy reference guides here on CGTalk for other sources to draw from. There is a list of good online sources (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=202&t=257570) as well as a list of books (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=202&t=257424) to look at. As Rebeccak has said, you should try to learn from a variety of sources or even take a figure drawing course at a local college if you can.

@Anand: Thank you very much for the compliment. The kind words really do help to motivate me and help me feel that I can be a successful artist if I keep practicing. It's easy to get impatient and discouraged when one is still learning.
Here are some sketches I did earlier today.
