Did you miss Siggraph this year or just the demo you wanted to see at the cebas booth? cebas is releasing taped demos from the show for everyone to see!
In this demo, Edwin Braun presents features of finalRender Maya from the floor of Siggraph 2007. This demo features fR Cameras, GI, fR light material, fR Procedural, fR Architectural, Light Portals, and Baking.

The final render always sounded very good, but is there a demo version to test?
Based on previos experience, it's really important to be able to test the software.
Also on this link there is a mention of rendering huge texture maps:
http://www.finalrender.com/products/feature.php?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=52&FID=472
How does this work? Could I use multiple maps (color, bump, specular, diffuse, displace) to render with final stage? How would maya cope with this?
Thanks

Heya Als,
Currently there is no "demo" of finalRender. You can e-mail us at info@cebas.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/info@cebas.com) for a full 15 day version to test out, but please be patient as we get a ton of requests. We do plan to remedy this lack of a demo soon.
As for textures. Ed talks about this in the video and there is actually a free video that shows some of this feature form Digital Tutors here:
http://www.digitaltutors.com/digital_tutors/tutorials.php?cat=finalrender
Basically we have a Dynamic Bitmap Pager that allows you to use any number of huge textures that are stored in our own format in bits. This way they are loaded as needed allowing for 30K renders or textures. You can use this for Diffuse, Spec, bump, etc. Its actually very easy to setup and works seamlessly with Maya.
For a look at more of finalRender for Mayas features you can also check out this video demo here:

Looking great, as always!
I was wondering if you had more info or examples of Final Render work with character animation rendered in GI. I've seen the basic examples of a sphere and a torus bouncing around in the floor and it looked neat, but are there other examples to look at? I'm talking camera movement and character movement. Does it still give a smooth GI solution?
I remember seeing some fairly recent video of "Lots of Robots" rendered with final render, but those were in 3d Studio Max. Can we expect similar quality/render times when using Final Render for Maya?
Also, I have never seen particles rendered in the scene with Final render. Would particles have the same self shadowed, 3d motion blurred quality as the other objects in a FR scene?
Thanks!

Heya Venkman,
You sure can expect the same results from finalRender for Maya as you saw in Andy's videos. He is using the same AQMC gi engine. For more complex examples of flicker free GI in production you can take a look at our latest Ghost interview here:
http://www.cebas.com/news/read.php?UD=10-7888-33-788&NID=248
Also finalRender form Maya was used by CaféFX for its flicker free GI in SpiderMan 3. More info here:

finalRender excels iat particle rendering in Maya. It has full use of particle instancing and renders most hardware types in software for some great effects. In our gallery there is some super images of particle work done by Ghost and finalRender was also used for extensive particle work with heavy Mblur in Spiderman 3.

nice, but what about SSS and displacement?.
Anyway final render looks way cool. and so fast it's crazy.
I really wish there was a demo.

i'm not that much of a render guy myself, but i know the render-folks here have been very fond of final render, and it sure produces some fine frames.

Heya Matt,
finalRender for Maya has great SSS and Displacement, and actually they work well together too which is a challenge for some other renderers. In this Video you can check out our MTD (micro triangle displacement)
http://www.cebasusa.com/finalRender%20Stage-2%20for%20Maya/finalRender%20for%20Maya%20Stage-2.html
Currently 3S and MTD are being used together in a new film project very successfully. We will have some training videos out with MTD and 3S on characters soon but we will need to wait for the movie to be released. 3S is implemented with our fast skin shader in Maya and C4D. You can see this shader in action in the finalRender Stage-2 for C4D Siggraph demo if you like here:
http://cebasusa.com/m_o_v_e_e/C4dSigg2007/C4dSigg2007.html
3S is about half way through in the video. This shows 3S with MTD too. It's the same shader and the exact same speed and render engine as Stage-2 is standalone.
Thanks

I know it's been mentioned that Finalrender is coming to MacOSX, but can anyone give an idea of when? Months? Years? :)

Hello Chad,
Yes it is! If you want to see it in action for C4D as well as see how far along we are you can take a look here:
http://www.cebas.com/news/read.php?UD=10-7888-33-788&NID=247
We are pretty far along on the C4D version (as you can see) and are currently working on getting our license system sorted out for MAC. Once we ship OSX Stage-2 for C4D we will ship OSX Stage-2 for Maya shortly after. There is no release date set as of yet.
If you are interested I post updates on our MAC progress fairly regularly on our forum at www.cebas.com (http://www.cebas.com). Please stop by :)
Thanks

We currently do not support Hair/Fur, Fluids, and PaintFX (except as geom). We are working on support for Hair/Fur ASAP.
Thanks

Oh ok, hair\fur are defenitly a priority since everything else seems to work so good.
Fluids comes second since it's usually Fx compostited on top i supposed we could wait a bit more for that.
Hurry up guy and it will be a blast ;)
cheers
