I recently decided to re-render an old image i created using Cinema 4D XL 8.1 to test the new HDRI features. Just wanted to see the differences it had on rendering times as well as the sort of quality I would be getting.

Original Image rendered in Cinema 4D XL 7.3. It took me 23 hours and 51 minutes to render this image in Radiosity.

New HDRI image created in Cinema 4D XL 8.1. This only took 7 hours to render..... BIG drop in render time....

The quality looks a lot better as well.... and a lot less "orangy"

what specs you got, and what settings you use???

that mirror looks pretty funky but nice pic man.

and that is one huge render time. I you must have your samples set at 10 million.

I think the reason why the render time took so long on the original image was because I had three separate lights in the scene and to make matters worse, i forgot to turn off the Auto Light option the the render setting.... A mistake i will not make again....

Having said that, back then I was still trying to grasp a serious understanding of radiosity as well.....

I think I do have a better understanding now....

Just to mention, the original image was rendered on an old machine.... A Duron 1.2, 128 MB Ram, Windows XP Pro

The new one was rendered on an Athlon XP 2200+, 256 MB Ram, so I guess that might explain the reduced rendering times.....

cool :) but to be honest ,you may find this annoying but.. I prefer the original :D , the new one seems to have a lot more radiosity artifacts and theres something strange happening with the mirror cupboard, both good images though

i agree with squidinic - the first image looks nicer due to the lack of artifacts.

but even so, 7 hours? thats still a heeeoouuuge render time, specially considering the low render settings.

I do too the first one seems warmer and I like that. It all depends on what your monitor settings are like. Also depends on whether you are a cold or how color person. everyone pecceives color a little bit diffrently.

is it daytime in the second picture and night time in the first? just wondering what was with the window. but yes the first one feels warmer. I guess because its chilly in my house now. :)

i guess the first image represented the room at night and the firt one represented the room during the day. Don't get me wrong, i still do like the first one too.... if only i could understand why the rendering took so long on both counts, maybe i will be able to do better next time. I definitely do remember not putting the Auto Light option off. But do you also think the models may have contributed to the render times?
