View Full Version : Questions about stroke
jumbowumbo2 12-16-2007, 06:23 PM I have two questions about the stroke feature (I primarily use AI, but if the answers are for PS, that works jus as well):
1) how do I create two strokes on one object? When I create new style, nothing happens. It seems like it should be easier, but I can't get it.
2) This one's a little more difficult to explain. I want a stroke effect where the stroke is not a color, but is transparent, so that the artboard, or background comes through. I could just make the stroke the same color as the background, but if the bg color changes, it makes things much more difficult than needed.
Thanks!

You can create strokes using paths or Stroke from the layer styles. You can make the stroke an object by making the layer’s Fill opacity zero and merging the layer to an empty layer below it. You can then create a double stroke by adding a stroke to the stroke pattern with Fill set to 0.
Can you better describe or show an example of what you are trying to do with the double stroke and the transparent stroke.

Is this the kind of double stroke effect you’re looking for?

1) Start with a shape on layer 1, like the orange shape in my sample.
2) Add a thick stroke.
3) Copy layer 1.
4) Delete the stroke on the original shape on the original layer 1.
5) Set layer Fill to 0 on ‘layer 1 copy’. You will see the stroke only.
6) Create a blank layer under ‘layer 1 copy’.
7) Merge down ‘layer 1 copy’ with the blank layer. Now you have a layer with the stroke pattern only with no actual fill.
8) Add a Stroke to the stroke pattern. It will create a stroke on the in and outside of the shape now.
9) Set Fill to 0. You can repeat the merge with blank layer thing again if you want to.
—There may be an easier way to do this, but this is how I do it. I hope it helps.
