View Full Version : Texturing horse (renewal)
Carina 04-21-2003, 03:04 PM I was digging through my old project files and found a horse that I modelled a few years ago.
Since my texturing at that point was less than adequate, I thought it would be fun to touch it up a bit.
Here it is.
The main body is procedural, while the legs and face have some hand drawn textures on it.
Next step is to better the highlights on the legs as they look a bit plastic at the moment.
Constructive crits very welcome!

Oh, and ignore the pink blob on his face;)

Heh thanks swirly..
You should see the number of tri's I found when I looked it over though!;)
Here's a snapshot of the shader network for the left hind leg, the other parts look more or less the same apart from some masks, maybe it's a slight overkill;)

It's a layered shader with two shaders for the speculars and one for colour.
GODAMN....hehe...looks kinda redundant to me..but like u said it was made a long time ago :D

heh, the rendertree wasn't..
that was made yesterday and today;)
A lot of it is dealing with the highlights etc. And since the underlying body is procedural, there are a lot of blend nodes which makes overlays for the white and black bits.

Carina, you are god.
there. i said it.

I like the speculars a lot now, i think the person who helped you tweaking them must be an awesome artist... no, the best one... no, a god! Just kidding, you made a great job, the speculars seem real. Just play a bit with the mesh and the bump mapping, add a tail, put it in an environment (the eyes could be better too) and you'll have a fantastic piece of art. Congratulations! :)

Yes, yes you are correct thirdeye;)
You are my god
And thanks to Stahlberg too for that skin tutorial, helped me on my way lots. (Although I was massively confused by most of it until I actually sat down and did it)

Been working a bit on the mane.
The speculars of the horse are a little bit off in this post, was playing with them a bit just before i rendered this.

I think you're doin a job carina, though he still looks castrated to me.
Perhaps vary up the strand in his mane a bit? They look a little repeating
Carina

Thanks guys!
And I've already commented on his willy, will not do so again;)
Anyway, the point about the mane looking a bit repetetive.. You're right. I'll probably add another layer ontop to get the mane more 'three dee' and make sure some strands poke out.

great looking model, but there seems to be a slight problem
the legs and body look a little flat to me, like you modeled mainly from the side view and didn't pay too much attention to the width
maybe it's just the lighting, but if it's not you should go back try make those shapes a little rounder ;)

I preferred the speculars of the 1st image, the newer ones give a flat 2Dish look. Nice hair, they seem a bit wet, add a tail now

And a tail...
http://lq.amsterdamned.org/images/horse%20new/withmaneandtail.jpg
I think it is the lighting that causes the flat look fist, but I will definitely look into it. Cause you're right it does look slightly flat.
And hey, thirdeye.. i think his bum looks bigger with the tail? Yes? No?

i dont know exactly what you did, i guess going back to the first speculars, but it looks mighty fine now. maybe make the hair a bit thicker. it looks very delicate right now...
and does the hair actually cast shadow ? cause it seems to be a bit.... pasted on or so.. lacking interaction with the body

amazing work with that procuderal Shaders. The Highlights seems to be realistik. Very kewl
but i miss the roughness... i think it looks to clean for a horse.

very good
no words...

Thanks guys!:)
Stimpy, yeah, the only thing I changed apart from the tail was to set the speculars back. I might thicken the hair out a bit, although I kind of like the delicate look..
And no, there are no shadows atm;)
worran, good point! I am probably going to add another layer ontop of this with a bit of dirt to make him look more realistic!

do u think about translucents and SSS for the skin? I think there should be more highlights. And u can increase the contrast...
have a look at these picture and compare it with yours:

I already have some translucence on the skin. I should probably sharpen up the highlights some though.. probably layering some anisotropic highlights might work.. Will play with it some.

not bad so far, but i think the proportions are not that good:
the "back" of the horse seems to be ' thoroughbred',
the "front" of the horse seems to be a 'cold-blooded'..
and a rather big head
(okay, if it shall be an intelligent horse, it's okay ;) )
so far my 6cents ..
Carina

Hmm, I've had comments before that the 'bum' looks a little small..
I was actually going for pony proportions, most the references I used were pictures of my own horse from when I was younger.
I'll have a double check with them, I haven't actually touched the it much modelling wise since I did it almost two years ago.

Did you try to play with an anisotropic shader? In some tweaks it helps to fake short fur (especialy cool in your case)

Nice to see you back in business Carina. Looks very nice so far. I'd add some more volume to the haird and make it fuller if you get my point. Umm..Yah, thats about it atm.
