View Full Version : using a free model for demo
tsarita 04-21-2003, 01:18 PM Hi,
I have a question. I've downloaded Ciceto from Daniel Lara's website to do some animation tests. I want to concentrate on animation and as I'm not a good modeler, I don't have time to build my own character. Of courseI will give full credit to Mr. Lara.
But would it be a good idea to put tests with a free character that I didn't design on a demo reel?

I would recommend against using another persons model for a reel.
Make your bones renderable and just put the animated bones on the reel. If done tastefully, it could look very good. It also depends on what type of job you are trying to get... if animation, the bones should be fine.... if Skinning then you need to create your own
- my 2 cents

Or make a cool proxy character out of cubes and spheres.
You can make an awesome character like this. And its fast to animate with.
Then just parent the cubes/spheres to the bones.
I love seeing animation with box characters so full of life.

I dont see why there should be a problem using other peoples models, as long as you ask for their permission to use them. I used to have the approach that I do it all model/setup etc, takes a lot of time....A stick/box figure could be very ok to use as would a model fully setuped for facial animation, just ask the person who built the model you want to use for persmission(I'll bet 99% of the case there wont be a problem using it), and mention who did what on your reel,
