I can't wait for x-men 2 to come and see the complete effect of nightcrawler...and the other mutants. I decided to draw and color one of the characters, nightcrawler. i'm drawing him in general, not from the movie.

here's the orginal sketch.
http://www.wam.umd.edu/~mfhaque/images/nightcrawler/nightcrawler2.jpg

i started to define his muscle even more in photoshop.

started to color.

Not sure quite what BigB meant but I think it's great work. The only thing I'd tweak is the face, it's a little sunken in on one side but that could be attributed to style, I guess. Now finish!:applause:

I ment the shading drawing....there is some text added "I have no clue what this is"

and it's his own drawing...

AH, you mean that car/garbage truck thinigie? See, I didn't read the comments on the art, I just looked at the pretty pictures. Silly me. :) Well, Hawk, what is it then?

heh thanks for the comments. the reason why i wrote "no clue what this is" is because when i was sketching it, i kept coming up with different ideas. first i thought of have him standing next to a pole...i didn't like that..then i thought...have him holding onto the landing gear of the x-jet..hm maybe. then i thought have him stand on top of a chruch holding onto a cross.

sometime when i sketch or doodle, i don't think about it and let my hand do the sketching

=)

no brush. I'm using the lasso tool and gradient tool to create the shadows and light. i used the brush to color the base color though.

can you make a tutorial on how to use the gradiant tool to do shading?

Well nightcrawler *IS* my fav X-man, and you've just modeled him very very very well and I like it!

However I always envisioned NightCrawler as a little bit 'sleeker', and the body is really good for that, but the hair (especially the chin bit) really doesn't seem nightcrawlerish.

I do like it though!

I like your concept art and the colors one too. I love the look you gave to him, i always loved this character and by the trailer of X-Men 2 i find him to look not like the cartoon (i know he does by the custom and all) because i think its the wrong actor. Maybe speak to fast to anyway.

the colors are well done, hope you put him inside a full (amazing) picture.

Great job with the shading. I've never heard of your method before, it is pretty interesting.

You might want to put some more church-esqe objects in the scene, because it is a little hard to understand the dome he is standing on. It almost looks like he is perched on a globe

Looks quite good although maybe a bit stiff:)
And the head seems placed very bad, like its growing out of his chest or something

Yes very good picture with the light, shadows and the colors. I would add something more in the background to give it a better feel to it maybe.

I don't agree with that.... I think it's just show how sneaky he is, I like it very much and also the scene that he is on a top of a church, I think this would look great in 3D....so.......is it gonna be 3D :)????

i agree with grand cherub...... it looks like it's grown out of his chest, ... yeah i know it shows his sneaky, but the joint of the head is not there, i don't see how his neck could bend like that....

Ah, leave the guy alone! I saw this thread and saw the sketch and color work and thought it was great! With the proportions, I do not see any real problems with it, maybe a little more shading to show depth, but thats it, I mean its nightcrawler now!. Great job, looking forward to seeing it finished, also, I love the way you are going about with your colors. Would you mind showing us your method of coloring the character. It looks as if you mask out sections and paint in them lighter to darker? I may be wrong but was interested..

Gkaine and SEL: I'm planning to to create a tutorial on how i created this piece after i finish the final. from start to finish.

for now i wrote this...

What do i use: Adobe Photoshop 7 and a wacom graphire2 tablet

1. I did a sketch of nightcrawler on a piece of paper.

2. scanned the image as 300dpi grayscale

3. took it into photoshop and cleaned up some of the lines using Level

4 [sketch layer]. i copy and pasted the sketch onto a new layer and left the background layer white (now i have two layers, top layer is the sketch, the bottom layer is the regular photoshop background layer). also i set the sketch layer to multiply.

5 [shade layer]. i created a new layer under the sketch layer. using the lasso tool and the gradient tool (gradient tool is set to a very dark blue and opactity is brought down a little) to create the shadow and to define his body muscles. this layer is also set to multiply.

6 [base color]. under the "shade layer" layer, i create a new layer. this will be the base color of nightcrawler. I pick a blue color and start painting his skin color. i color his eyes yellow, pants gray/blue color, etc.

7. [soft highlights]. above the "shade layer" i create a new layer and set it to screen, using the lasso and graident tool again, i create soft highlights. the graident is set to a light blue/white color.

i hope this helps.

cheers.
