View Full Version : Poll: Which C4D Version?

Sorry if this is a repeat of any recent thread (the forum search function was broken as I write this), but from time to time us plugin developers want to check the pulse of the community to help determine where to spend out development efforts.

So the question is "Which version of C4D do you currently use?"

Thanks,

Keith

I knew that there were a lot of Mac users, but I hadn't realized that there were this many.

I've been making a living with 8.2 (yeah, I know) for years, but I'm really looking forward to finally getting 10.5 in March or April.

Seems that cinema is the de-facto choice for Mac users.

It's the 3dsmax of the Mac world.

For good reason too. Not only is it an excellent app, but it's cost effective and now has Vray support.
Mac users are somewhat limited when it comes to 3D apps. Aside from cinema, the only other options for a complete 3D package are Maya and Modo.
And Maya is not only expensive but it's much harder to use than cinema.
The rest are either specialty apps or geared more toward hobbyists.

Once they release Zbrush3 for the Mac, the combination of that, cinema and Photoshop will give us Mac users a comparable arsenal to PC users with Max-ZB-PS.

Personally, I'm so sick of waiting for ZB3 that I feel like finding a stray dog and beating it with a stick then fed-ex the carcass to Pixologic.
*I love animals and I would never do that*
Just illustrating my frustration.

I mean, why in the hell would it take THIS LONG to get the Mac version out!?
On top of that, the ZB2 demo is non-existant so I can't even start getting familiar with it while I wait.
I know you can buy ZB3 for the PC and then transfer your license, but I don't have a PC that would run it well enough to be worthwhile and my Mac is PowerPC.

...

...ever heard of lightwave?

modo is not yet a full animation package, many important features are still missing.

No. What is it? A render engine?

Kidding.....

Forgot about Lightwave, my bad.

Are you a Lightwave fanatic or something? Just asking cause you almost seem annoyed that I didn't mention it.

I didn't know that about Modo's lack of animation tools either.
I'm more of a still image artist as my introduction to art was an antiquated Tachihara wide format film camera.

Don't want you to get annoyed, so I feel I must throw out a disclaimer that I'm not insinuating anything against animation in any way. I'm just speaking from my own perspective.
I went to the luxology website after hearing good things about their sculpting tools and organic modeling capabilities to see about a demo due to the delay on ZB3, and they want $25 for the blasted demo.

Another disclaimer- I'm not saying anything is wrong with charging for a demo, it's their decision to do so if they want.
Just as it's my decision to not want to pay for one.

I'm perfectly happy with cinema and awaiting Zbrush.
I would've taken Modo for a test drive, but I'm not interested enough to pay for the demo. Especially since they said there will be a free one at some point in the future.

I'm mainly just making conversation here.
I don't claim that everything I say is accurate to the letter or taking every facet of computer graphics into consideration.

hey dtox, no problems at all with your posts... i just would put it the other way round, concerning 3d on mac. the only 2 'big guys' missing on mac side are 3dmax and xsi. the latter, maybe, one day will find it's way...

as for myself, i'm mainly doing stills too. i've worked with electric image, then cinema for some time when release 8 was out, and then started using lightwave as my main 3d app, especially because of fprime and the easy workflow in LW. but i'm learning modo, too, these days ;) what i mean: when you are doing 3d for a living, then one tool is never enough.

btw. vray for cinema looks like an interesting option, too. did you try it?

Houndini is missing too... IMHO the closest thing to max is maya, not c4d, as far as power/high end plug ins, difficulty of use, and aged core goes. Besides even though max has integrated plug ins such as character studio, maya is still the first choice when it comes to feature film animation.
As far as 3d packages go, I guess c4d/maya/lightwave covers most people's needs, but I would like to see Houndini and XSI coming to the mac as well.

Still I like seeing such high percentages of mac users here!

I can't change my vote, but I now use r10.5x UB.

So subtract 1 from the 8.5 column and add it to the 10.5 UB column :D

I can't say about XSI but MAX 9, and MAX 2008 run fine on a MacIntel with XP Pro.

But I'm assuming that XSI will run fine, too. Zbrush 3.1 runs fine as well.

Many choices, no restrictions; It's a Good Thing.

They all run fine, provided you're in Bootcamp, Z-Brush runs acceptably via Parallels/VMWare (it doesn't use hardware viewport acceleration), the others suffer somewhat through virtualisation.

Most Mac users prefer to use OSX though which restricts the possibly options. Anyhow the merits and failings of all the applications have been covered numerous times elsewhere and need not be here.

Would be interested to know who choose the "other" option... C4d GO? C4d ART? Is R5 still floating around? Or could it be a beta user with R10.6...

I would argue that being a Mac user is the same thing as using OS X. Just as running Windows on Apple hardware would make one a Windows user. It's definitely great to have the option of running both on one machine though.

It's very interesting to see objective information about the makeup of the C4D user base.
