View Full Version : WIP: yet ANOTHER robot

Well, It's hardly worth showing yet but I thought I'd get a jump on bone lengths and stuff before I got to far into it. I don't have any conceptual sketches for this yet, (well, a couple crappy ones) but I envision it being a tall, long and slender robot, similiar to those aliens in the Attack of the clones, Su Lama, I think.

Im liking where this one could go, very stylish. I want you to go ahead and model untill you get this one done. So no sleeping or eating, or anything that would distract you from finishing :) just kidding. But do show us more as you get done with it :) Im liking it already...

miketche

It certainly is tall and skinny. Nice start. Looks a little fragile. Maybe that's what your going for.

dandavis
04-21-2003, 05:52 AM
Yea, I really need to finalize this design with a sketch (which I almost always have). I have a pretty good idear in my head though. I definately want him to be very slender, long lines, etc. which would make him fragile I guess. Also, I want to keep the "roboto details" to a minimum. Sort of a minimalist robot, if you will. Clean, minimal textures, sterile looking. Chrome and white plastic, I'm thinking. Yea.

Great start. Hard to believe but it is already starting to get some personality.

nice concept so far. what bugs me are those irregular bumps on the front side. they look a little bit to random for beeing minimalistic IMO.

cheers marcom

Yep, the bumps in the front will get the ax. I don't really like them either. At the very least, there will be fewer and they will be smaller. Thanks.

hmm those front bumps look like abs or some kinda bugs stomach. I think It would be a good idea to ax umm comptely.

but this looks to be another great picture.

dandavis
04-21-2003, 07:57 PM
Thanks JIII, yep, I'm gonna try to stay away from the extrude/extrude/hypernurby look with this bot. It's a cool effect but it sure get's used alot.

flingster

dandavis: looks cool...how about this time a long slender face to it...also thin arms like you have but more machining details around the arms...eg small delicate high engineered parts for a more sophiticated robot...more costly parted...better engineered...don't need to be as bulky etc...

then what the hell is the purpose of this droid...multi functional....single function...how does it communicate? ....how old is it? where has it been ? crucially what does it do.... how easy is it to repair...replace one little motor/coil etc...or replace a whole limb....accessibility for maintenance personnel....how good a life time has it had...has it been to war...has it been a manual labour droid...is it a precision medic...or diplomatic....whatever...give it a story and your modelling is gonna be more real...IMHO....man i want to believe this droid is possible....

now knock em dead....and keep posting bud...cos i'm loving the whole droid stuff....just i don't wanna see just another droid...i wanna see a dandavis droid!!! got me....sort it....heh heh.

dandavis

Here is the scoop, Fling, this droid is going to work in a laboratory. He will need highly dextrous hands and limbs so your suggestions are great. Also, I was planning on giving him a long, slender head so right on the mark there too.

As I said also, he is going to work in a clean, sterile environment so texturing this should be a breeze. I'm thinking lots of white plastic with chrome highlights.

I'm glad your enjoying watching me progress. I always get worried that I'm overkill sometimes.

Stay tuned, more updates on the way.

That's the abridged lowdown on his story.

sounds goodie...:p

I've got the basic head in. It's getting weird folks. Tried about 4 variations of the chest and stuck with the original one, it just seemed to fit better with the strange head.

Is it mech or is it org? I dunno yet, as always, my model has kind of veered off in another direction than what I originally intended. Stay tuned.

miketche

Hmmmm.. I'm not sure I like the head as is. The body has a lot of long smooth gentle lines, but the head (though tall and narrow) does not seem to follow this design. It seems like it has more hard and detailed edges. I think going with a simpler design on the head would work better.

But, that's just me.:D

flingster
04-22-2003, 10:44 PM
that head is well original...i like it...but i know what miketche is talking about.

dandavis
04-22-2003, 11:04 PM
yea, the head is strange, simple is probably better, I think I'll save that head for a later date and give this guy a new noggin. Oh, BTW Michael, I downloaded a plug called UV2BMP that unwraps meshes for you in C4D and exports them so you can open them in PS and paint textures. I know you don't have BP so I thought you might find it useful. There is a link in the 'rosity forum if your interested. I was playing with it a bit and it appears to work pretty well in OSX. More testing tonight. Thanks for the confirmation on the head.

miketche
04-22-2003, 11:12 PM
Ya, I like the head. I just think it would work better on a more detailed robot.

I've played with UV2BMP before. Couldn't figure it out. No documentation with the one I had. Guess I should play with it some more.:wip:

dandavis

Now that I look at this after a while of being away from it, I think if fits neatly into the "What the hell was I thinking" catagory. Although I kinda like the weird way the head looks, it's totaly wrong for that chest. Maybe I'll ditch the chest and work with the head. I have no gameplan really so, I'm gonna play it by ear.

dandavis
04-23-2003, 12:05 PM
Here is a new render showing how the new head is coming along. I'm not finished with it yet.

Yes, I like that head much better. And the clean torso area looks good too.

flingster
04-23-2003, 07:29 PM
dandavis: what with all the discussion about the chest detailing...how about expanding on the detailing for the chest by taking the detailing from the head and face areas and coming up with something matching for the chest? just a thought.
looking good though...also how about orange eyes this time...why orange this time...dunno really...just a change from blue? heh heh.:wavey:

dandavis
04-24-2003, 02:36 AM
Thanks guys, I finally got the dough to upgrade to V8 so from this point on, it's going to be me getting used to the new tools/features.

Fling: I gave him orange eyes and it looks kinda cool. ;)

JIII
04-24-2003, 02:46 AM
Congrats on getting V8. and keep making those robots you just might make one that is as justas good as squids.

dandavis
04-24-2003, 07:16 AM
I gotta say that v8 kicks some serious booty. Diggin the edge weight tool. I'm probably the last kid on the block to upgrade, aren't I.

Anyway....

This one's going a bit slower and the plans have changed since his first days.

Textures aren't final, although they probably will be the base for something I'm planning to paint on top of them....maybe.

Modeling also not final, obviously. Thanks for checking back.

dandavis: rockin'....v cool. i think you gotta get that droid out of the lab/hospital....and take him to the battlefield....i wouldn't want a fierce looking droid like that operating on me...shooting at me i could handle...liking the detailing on the chest area fits with the head part...nice work.

glad youre having so much fun with R8...its well worth an upgrade...will pay for itself in months...just in usability and functionality..:applause:

Hey, Dan, this may not fit at all with what you had in mind, but I think he would look really cool in a white lab coat... maybe a metal one?

Just a thought.

He's looking really good.

Might be a cool twist to make him like 50 feet tall towering over a city :)

flingster

looking good...but definitely agree....kill those boots! heh heh

dunno if its camera angle or what but somehow his hands look to small in proportion with the rest of him.

coming along nicely as usual though.

dandavis

OK, here's the final model and your last chance to influence the direction of this robot.

Squid: I like the idea about the weapon alot, there is going to be a secondary robot in the scene I have in mind for this who will be wielding a weapon like that, thanks!

flingster: I've enlarged the hands a bit and I think they fit better now too, thanks!

JoelD: I have a scene planned out for this but thanks for the suggestion! And me working with squid? Oh my, that would be cool some day.

Cinema: actually, I had some clothes in mind for this model too, funny you mention it, similar to your suggestion, but when I put them on the robot, I didn't like the way it looked so they got the ax, sorry, and thanks for the critique!

his feet are definately an improvement, but I think they'd be better if they were more skeletal, similar to hands, more of a mechanism, at the moment there doesn't appear to be a visible connection between the foot and the ankle (something like attached image maybe, this has two toes, just can't see em)

dandavis
04-28-2003, 12:52 AM
Excellent squid! I'm jazzed now about the feet. I just couldn't come up with anything that I really liked but I think your outline will work great! I'm on it!

dandavis
04-28-2003, 05:00 AM
Thanks squid, the feet look 100 times better IMO. I'm forever in your debt. I guess it's done. On to the next one. Thanks for all your help. Oh yea, I should plug Eric's (Audity) textures. I got them from Renderosity's free materials and he made them. They are really quite nice. :applause:

NICE robot!

How are you setting him up? IK? SOFTIK?

- pjc

JIII
04-28-2003, 08:33 PM
Might want to make those feet even smaller dude I mean the whole image islike skinny and metalic. the feet are organic and not to skinny.

maybe if you made umm a tad smaller and then used like a 75 percent hypernurbs weighting.

If you did that it would rock.

just my opinion of course.

any way nice nice picture.

dandavis
04-28-2003, 08:33 PM
Well, I guess it would be Soft IK. There are no bones, only heirarchies which facilitate easy posing. Am I right in thinking that's Soft IK?? -- dano

JIII
04-28-2003, 08:36 PM
SOFT IK is a tag, it sounds to me like you are using posemixer or something like that.

soft IK is a tag that goes on your bones. so it probibly isnt that.

dandavis
04-28-2003, 08:44 PM
Well, I guess I'm using neither, then. No bones. Just heirarchies and axis points at the joints. Easy smeazy. Not really planning on animating so I didn't see the need. -- dano
