Hi all,

I already posted that in the finished work threads, but i just wanted to share my lightening studies.

I used only 2 lights : 1 area light, and one spot light. Radiosity settings are 130% in 6x18, and i have a brown background.
No plugins for the subsurface scattering, but just alot of hours to find the settings.

What do you think ?

What are your surface settings, if I may ask? I'm really interested to see :)
The skin reacts so beautifully to the light!

Well i think the main thing is probably translucency with a setting of 60%, and just behing my object is the spotlight, red color with 63% of intensity.

The two lights are then playing between them to cross on the object, giving all the "weird" aspect of the skin.

Except that, i don't have any other special settings for the surface. :)

Aaah that makes sense then :)

I was actually kinda hoping that you were doing it some other way! Because although this looks great in this render, if you were to start placing objects into this scene, and placing the character amidst those objects, he would begin to look quite strange in the renders. Translucency can have some drawbacks since you can't control it's penetration.

Although maybe that new gradient can do that... still need to play around with it.

yes, that's right Leigh. In fact you could fake this subsurface scattering without playing with the back light, by simply add a special map on the translucency channel, with why not gradients, or even simply an image map to fix just some part of it.

Have a look on Glenn Melenhorst example : http://www.3dluvr.com/glenn/new/head.htm

Then you can do just a better render without this back light :)

It's amazing what a difference translucency/sss makes. Really incredible :)
