This is for the 2D mini-challenge of life under the ocean.. I don't seem to be getting any feedback from that thread, so maybe here? I'm working on fleshing out the details of the creature, still... and I'm uncertain what colour scheme makes the most sense. Also, the background is temporary -- I just wanted to put it in some envirnoment. So, that plus any other observations you might have..

I think that looks really cool
I also think the green is a good choice, suits it really well :)

Can't really offer much advice as I don't really know much about this sort of work, but I just wanted to say that I really like it so far :)

Thanks, Leigh! I don't know why you couldn't offer advice... I don't think it's program specific or anything, just ideas and aesthetics... I'm glad you dig it, though! Here's an update, see whatchya think:

I think the green one is better. I don't know... I associate blue with sky, beaches, freshness etc, that's not an environment I would expect such creatures. Green however, gives it's filthy look which I like about it.

The creature itself is beautiful!

oh boy! very inspiring work!

That indeed rocks. :buttrock:

I agree the green one is more freaky/spooky looking, which I think even though things can be in full color down in the ocean, the green and of course the background gives you more of an uncharted depth feeling.

I love the enhanced structure and details in the blue one though, maybe somewhere between the two? Awesome design.

I'm working on some alien underwater stuff and I can see from this I gotta push it all farther :D

Garma and Hypercube, I agree with your thoughts on this colouring... it's just the colour I've been working on it in... I didn't bother changing it yet, but I shall. On that note, check out the 2D mini-challenge thread that started me on this in the first place... there's yet another colouring. I worry that the deep blue/red hue is too remeniscent of the Matrix sentries, though... Detail seems to fade, too... I dunno.

I'm glad everyone likes the creature, itself... obviously, that's where the energy's going - environments have always been something I've shyed away from. I'll be working on changing that.

Maximus, thank you! I hope that's true, and you are inspired-- a great compliment if my work actually motivates someone else, and I have certainly found plenty on this forum that has prompted me to work, when else there would been none. Good forum!:applause:

Thanks again for your comments, guys! I'll post something more colourful w/ the recent pic + a background, soon.

Looks great, the green is more atmospheric, but the blue would be more realistic i think, someone once told me that greenish undersea environments are usually only found close to shore and are caused by algea, so in a Deep Sea environment it's far more likely to be dark blue, course I'm not a marine biologist or anything, so you might want to check that;)

O.k. I went with the green. I think this's about near done. :bounce:What do YOU think?

Hey William,

these types of work require LOTS and LOTS of practice and
observation... man, im jealous...

im one cv to copy-cat your crustraceous back on this one for my monster!

I wanna see your homepage!!! plz ?

C ya buddy!

William b. Hand

Hey, Maximus!
um... you said "im one cv to copy-cat..."
What does that mean? If you find inspiration in this guy for your monster back, that's awesome!
You're right about this taking me some time... too much time, I think.
I'm trying to develop faster methods of doing things, but they sure ain't too fast right now. I think this is finally done, although I'm open to suggestions. There's (yet) another version of this that I did, in which I utilized the blur tool to some interesting effect... but, it pained me to see details disappear, so maybe I'll use that in another picture.
As far as webpage goes... well, I really wanna get a proper site going. What I have isn't quite ready for prime-time, I don't think. I'll try not to make you wait too long, though.
:D
Anybody have any suggestions? What do you think of the green? The background? The smaller # of eyes? The final vs. the original sketch? Comments? Critique?

Maximus Groff

green is a killer... stick to it! ;)

I totally agree on get faster techniks... i will pick one day to try out some 10 min faster builds and note down the best "paths"..

I think u should try more "glow" effects to see more dramatic results... deep sea is very dark... should get interesting contrast pics..

ībout the web site... dont rush things out dude... its like a meal, if you dont wait the cook time, you could have a bad lunch (that is crazy, but i think its close.. ;) )

Do u have any 3d work ?

C ya!

nice drawing,
the only thing i would add, is consider the light source, if he is deep sea creature, whats lighting him. and the light would fall of quickly.
overall looks nice.

William b. Hand
04-24-2003, 06:14 PM
Yeah... I considered putting in some lighting/camera equipment off to the side ... also, was thinking maybe a little diver that'd make it look huge... but, it's something for the future, maybe. At this point, I'm willing to call it done. I'll keep the suggestion about light source in mind in the future, though. My answer to that always used to be that the existence of light reveals that there must be a source, and isn't the subject more interesting than what's lighting it? But, I'm seeing the limitations of that thought. It'll take some doing, but you should see further integration of environment into my pieces..
The light falloff might not be enough, because I forget the bigger picture, and get lost in rendering detail... once it's there, it's hard to sacrifice. Overall, I'm happy with the results here.
Hm... "glow effects" I think it's too late for that, except there're a few things you might mean... What do you mean? contrast too... yeah, I think I'll be revisiting this creature in the future. But, for now... On to other things!
Thanks to everbuddy who commented! -Wm.

the idea is really good but why dun u make it with blue semi-transperance like some spiritual creature flying in the blue sky!

William b. Hand
04-29-2003, 04:08 AM
Thanks, Teyon! I thought this was done, but I've got a hankerin' to go have some fun with it... something offbeat, maybe.
Taufux, the reason I didn't make this creature "flying in the blue sky" is because I did this image for the UNDERSEA mini-challenge. So... I figured the water was an important element. However... Let's see whether my creative juices are flowin' tonight, maybe it will end up in the sky after all?
Oh, and thank you Leigh! Did you ever investigate that LOTR job lead? Was that even still current? (I want everybody to get jobs!:bounce: )
Nice forum link, Maximus! I feel like just the one is enough for me... SO much HERE that I haven't been able to investigate...Eye,yi yi. And my learnin' 3D is momentarily curtailed by my crappy mouse. Pen tool duznt seem to be compatible, so I'm gunna hafta buy a propper mouse.:annoyed:

Here's a new take on my creature...
taufux, you said the right thing at just the right moment. I dunno if this is what you were thinking, but somehow this more dreamy vision has been floating around in my head, and I needed that catalyst. Sank you.
This is also something that pleases me, because I very much like the idea of children's book illustration (in addition to the more creepy stuff that pervades my art). I imagine it being a blend of the two, actually. Anyhow, thoughts? C&C? I wasn't sure if I should leave the rider monochrome, like the creature, or tinted... like it is, here.
This revised piece is called "Moonlit Flight".

I'm sorry but without his claws and in blue it really looks a bit like the setinels from the matrix don't you think?

But I like it anyway, GREAT job!!

William b. Hand
04-29-2003, 08:11 PM
Huh... well... it does have more than two eyes, it's bug-like, and the general colouring is blue... but, other than that Straightmark... I think if you look at some pictures of the sentinels, you'll see that this creature bears very little resemblance at all to them.
I'm glad you like it anyway, though!

Well, this picture ended in two rather different destinations. I hope both are valid... The original intent of the pic remains the green bottom pg.1, and it's true home is the undersea mini-challenge.
...Whereas this fanciful "neverending story"ish version is simply an alternate reality for the creature.
Thank you guys for all your comments! -Wm.

That came out beautifully

Hehehe "Oooh Falcor, do you think that the Ivory Tower still stands?" :p

The little kid reminds me of the character from the book, "The Little Prince" - it's very cool. I like the simplicity of it :D

Very nice work :applause:

Loooking good,

Just one question, why is your deep see creature flying above the clouds??

William b. Hand
05-14-2003, 08:12 PM
Thanks, oxyg3n! What you see on page 2 was simply an offshoot. Bottom of page 1, this thread, shows the "final" version - or Click Here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55781).

its quite amazing how the addition of a child riding on the back of the creature transforms my perspective.

before the creature was the devourer of deep sea life, one of the predators of the ultra depths, put a child on his back and he becomes semi intelligent friendly dream monster taking the child to a happy destination while protecting him from any nasties.

oh.. and your painting skills are awesome, lovely work all round:thumbsup:

Fantastic creature, Have you come up with the rest of its body? I'd love to see more of it. Hope a 3d version is on the cards.

Thanks for the positive words!
TyKeiL, you hit it on the head! Those were both the impressions I was shootin' fer.
d_s, the rest of its body? Hm... well, you can pretty much see all of the creature (although it gets shadowy)... I was trying to resist the temptation to flesh it out too much and lose the mood. I certainly could show more, I suppose...
As for a 3D version, I hope so. I'm still in the fetus stage of modeling, so don't look for anything soon. I do appreciate the sentiment.:p

the mood is very silent which i really like! i must admit that i like the und water version more. on the other hand, the friendly feeling in the air-version makes me believe the world i know is a good place - a real home. at least in my very own fantasy.

good work

Sweet! I like it. How long does a creature like that live for?

I like the finished green one. Although the blue seemed to have more contrast. Maybe make the background darker further into the distance. Hmmm, can you show perspective with just water? Maybe with those wavy streamy things; maybe differences in how big or in focus the water particles are.

Good job.

sad - I'm glad (!) you like both versions of this for their respective strengths... Maybe you are exaggerating a little, but I thank you for it :) !
toonface - How long a lifespan??.. It hadn't occurred to me. I guess I don't really know so much about this creature after all!
I think I understand what you're saying about the wavy streamy things, and communicating depth... I wrestled with that one a bit. I did try to change the size and focus of the floating particles, but maybe not enough. I was uncertain of what to do, and I was ready for the pic to be finis... think I should go back into it? I'll go back into it if you guys pressure me.;)
(Love your toon style, by the way!)

Otherwise, I should maybe post a new image... and get some thoughts on that.

Rotamus - Thanks for the upbeat comment!
You guys rule, this thread has been a real treat for me.
