View Full Version : Greeble effect?
Kotayus 04-20-2003, 11:15 PM Is there any thing that can REMOTELY do what the greeble plugin for 3dmax can do? for c4d? Instant city scapes?

I think there's a plug called Structure that can do similar things. The demo is free but the functionality is limited. It's in the cafe. You should check it out. -- dano

plugincafe, you sohuld know by now everything to do with maxon is coffee related. Funny beng a german company you think everything would be beer or sausage related.
Plugin cafe is what he means.
Look on maxon's website there you will find the link my young padawan.

Kotayus: dunno what this greeble is but structure basically adds to say an existing building making it more sci-fi....
paul everett is currently working on something called citygen i think...which i presume is a city scape generator as opposed building mod thingy.
http://www.tools4d.com/
but not as far as i'm aware released...see front page of homepage for a flybye

Is Structure still available? I tried looking at the site recently and it was dead.
Darf's plugin Jenna can be helpful at acheiving this effect--DiTools would as well.
Here's a cool link to check out about greeble techniques.
http://www.scifi-meshes.com/tutorials/norling/greeble/greeble.html
One trick is to use 3d text (using a blocky font) and choosing "L"s "E"s and other "greebly" looking characters to quickly create detail on a surface. (Just type in random letters--then make editable.
As far as creating a city-- like Flingster said--keep an eye on Paul's site.

I just happenned to create some images Saturday morning using the random poly extrude method to try and create a cool futuristic "greebly" cityscape. I spent all of 40 minutes (maybe less) creating theses scenes--so its pretty easy to do. Most of the time I took was dealing with lighting and effects.
However, its not true "greebling" as i am only extruding square polygons. I think Structure give you much more randomness to the shapes that are generated. Still it was fun and semi-pertinant to the thread and a coincidence that I just happenned to try this, so I thought I'd share.

Not too happy with the material --especially close up--but I just happenned to have it (didnt create the texture) so I plopped it on.

JoelD: thanks for the link...yup structure is what you want then for this stuff...infact its ideal...however the only link i had for it awhile ago and the website was dead! it was about 50 bucks as far as i can remember...maybe more...its what benedict campbell used for that city scene to give his buildings future look. if anybody has a new link let me know - cheers.

Could you imagine?!
Cinema 4d R9 with the new improved
"Bratwurst" N-Gon generator :)
Then theres the new improved Mel script inspired replacement to COFFEE: "Weissedunkelscript"....
calling mangkeys. where are you dude.
and if you cant hear this maybe paul everett can.
and if one of them does we will have a functioning city/greeb plugin for C4D which would rock.

Thanks fling--it really wasn't as hard as it looks. I just took a cube, subdivided it a few times then selected all polys on one face, extruded with variance pumped up and preserve groups turned off. Subdivided the extruded polys once more--extruded again. Repeated this for the other faces. Copied the cube in a row 2 or 3 times--rotaiting at 90 degrees so wouldnt get a repeating pattern, dropped it into a symmetry object (to create the reflected other side of the "street") then copied the original row to create the "street" surface. Selected a few polys on the ground and extruded them to create the 2 towers. Added volumetric lights, fog, and rendered. Voila.
geez you are right dude this is easy. this pic took me 5 minutes, notkidding about the time.of course a slight bevel would make it look much better.

That's really cool, such a nice effect in very little time, I think I may give that a go later.
hey joel can you post the texture you used please.I want to see how this is done. to texture the diffrent layers of polys with out using selections.

Huh, learn something new every day. I didn't know you could extrude with variance like that. Neato. :bounce:

Here it is. I used it in the bump channel as is and in color channel with bhodinut brightness contrast and b.n. hue to adjust it a bit. Also brought it into the specular channel.
Applied it with cubic projection with tiling set to around 5 for X and Y.

Actually, I think it looks pretty similar to a shader you can get over at deepshade.com. It's called "Instant Space". Here's a link:

There you go.
Could be where I originally grabbed it.
Its not too hard to create your own custom texture in illustrator/photoshop either. Basically just create and copy a bunch of rectangles and squres at varying shades of gray.
You can also layer the Bhodinut tiles shader in interesting ways in bhodinut fusion.
thanks guys learn something new every day on this forum

Hi flingster
I would like to do more with it if I get the time. Heres another image I created a few years ago using the same poly extrude technique for the background buildings.
(forgive me Kotayus for posting my stuff in your thread!--it just worked out that way since it was greeble-related)
http://www.joeldubin.net/fun/speederonejpg.jpg
I may throw the vehicle shown in the link and a few others into the scene if I get a chance. I'd also like to add more randmness to the surface detail of the city and add lights and windows. Don't hold me to any of that though... Not as prolific with the "just for fun" projects as someone like squidinc. :) Wish I had more time!

BhodiNUT? What's that? I've def. heard it before, but doesn't ring a bell. Does it come with c4d?
open a material. click on the triangle. if you cant see where it says bhodinut I would be suprised.
and yes SLA smells like almonds is a former bhodinut product, of course bhodinut is now a former company.
It was so sad when Bhodi died, like losing a pet fish or something.
here is an expansion I did on my last image.
hope you folks don't mind me cluttering up this thread.

Whilst we're on this subject, check out:
http://www.ap3d.com/Alternate_Perspective.htm
Look under 'Tutorials', then 'Better Space'. This is Lightwave specific but they are very good tutorials and can be easily modified to use with C4D
Cheers

Jamie's Tip No. 17: A quick way to get varying gray squares is to use Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, make a white image, cover it with grayscale noise and pixellate it.
