Hi, I decide to improve my modelling skills using z-brush. So I would like to post my stuff here for critics and suggestions. I chose to start with something easier as a bust (to not have to model a whole body at this point). I had a great time doing it and I think I will go for more busts. The reference picture was the Bust of Giovanni Chellini (1456) by Antonio Rosselino.

Great start ralphgmr, There are a few minor things that I noticed.
1. The nose in the original is pointed out more yours is somewhat pointing down, pull it out away from the face a bit and smooth the hard crease on the nose bridge. Not all of it just the part of the bridge below the eyes and above the nose tip. Also, the nasolabial fold should curve around the nostril.
2. The fold of skin is much subtler than what you have sculpted. Tone it down a bit.
3. Lastly, some of the folds in the original garment fold over themselves, this is tricky to do in ZBrush but try and work on it, it'll result in a better looking cloth.

Again, great start, I hope this helps, here's an image of the areas that stick out to me. Keep it up

Did some changes. Added some details. Some for the best other for the worst. I'm not very satisfied with it, but I guess for a first shot it's ok. I guess I will be doing another bust, kinda getting bored with this one. Crits and sugests are welcome! Cheers!

Hi Ralph,

I'm not really a Zbrusher, but I might recommend softening the bridge of the nose a bit - the corners are a bit sharp / pinched. Also I think his cheeks need more structure, it looks like the muscle structure is collapsed beneath the folds. Nice start!

You might be interested in this kind of workshop (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=562541).

He kind of looks like Ben Stein. One bit of advice I would give is that if you get to a point where you keep trying and it's not working and you don't know why, don't give up. Because it'll happen on your next model too, try and work through problems and you'll be rewarded for it. Try taking a picture of the original and a print screen of the model and take them into photoshop. Then see where the model and the original don't line up. Then make the appropriate changes in zbrush and see if it makes a difference. Good luck :)

Hi Rebecca, thank you for the crititcs. It's nice to have a review of such a talented artist like you. From time to time I go to your portfolio for inspiration. You have really great images there. As for the workshops, I would love to participate, I am always following the participants entries closely, but the workshops always come at the wrong time when usually I don't have time to participate. Maybe the next one, I have more luck!

Hey Pavlin, thanks for your feedback! I know exactly what you mean. But I am kind of tired getting stuck at some personal projects for ages. I want to flow more with this thread as a real sketchbook. My intention is doing a lot of models, some could turn out good, others maybe not. Maybe later I come back to the favorite ones and work on them more, even finish for demoreel, lighting properly, shading, etc. The mission is keep going! I hope you stick around! Cheers!

Hi Ralph, you're welcome! :) Thanks for your comments, that's really kind of you. There will definitely be future workshops (Magda's done such a great job with the first two 3D ones, I hope they will continue) but an easy way to know when a new one starts is to subscribe to this thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=379951). Good luck with your model, will definitely follow your progress.

Hi, didn't have much time to work on zbrush models as I've wished, but I did find sometime to draw a little. Inspired by bumskee thread, I start doing some fast pose sketches. I start looking for some pics on the internet, but then looking at the universitie's library I found an incredible book with nude male photographs from David Leddick. Spectacular reference book. Almost 700 pages of pictures of males naked since the beginning of the century until today. So here are some of the drawings:

Now I am on a new mission. Still a long way to finish, I want to do the whole body. It's too much detail and I am having trouble with the resolution of the basemesh. The beard and specially the hair, I don't get enough resolution to keep the strokes smooth enough. Have to figure it out how to solve this problem without having to divide the whole mesh once more.
The marble material, I found at zbrushcentral from Fatmiri.

the standard red wax material from zbrush

Hi anandpg,

well that's not the actual basemesh, it's the lowest subdivision wireframe. The actual base mesh was something totally different, it was a child base mesh from an old never finished project. I chose it because the face, hands and feets were well edge looped. But I am in some kind of trouble with the hair and beard now because I didn't predict that I would need so much extra subdivisions on those areas. So the basemesh is now quite messy and I am quite not happy with it. The next project I will spend extra time analysing critical areas and build a better basemesh.

CyborgJA - Thanks a lot. I'll try posting both things on this thread. Just looked at your portfolio, WOW it's awesome. Congratulations!

Hi Ralph! I can see that you have had to locally subdivide on the hair and ears. otherwise, it is a pretty decent mesh! You might wanna try out the new "retopologise" in ZBrush if you are having second thoughts about your basemesh. it is a lot of work, but definitely worth a try!:)

You are too gentle, my poor portfolio is suffering cause of work...however Anand is a God of 3D so I suggest you to follow his hints.

Update as soon as possible !

A drawing I did for the assignment on the Open Figure Drawing Workshop - NEW BARGUE - 022 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=578369&page=1&pp=50). From the orignial Mashru Mishu (http://fx81.cgsociety.org/gallery/)'s 3D artwork.

Made some updates. I modelled the hand and I think looks reasonable, but I'm still missing some more details like veins and scratches. I've done some retopo of the head (some wires were getting messed up) and made more hair locks, but still some more to go (Why didn't I choose a bald guy?) http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/images/smilies/biggrin2.gif

Which material you guys find better to view the details? I found the Fatmiri's material so cool (some fine lines kind of pop up) but sometimes I find easier to view on the standard red wax material.

and the head updated, but still a lot to do:

In terms of just seeing things the simpler the material the better largely. A basic white, or even the fast shader work well. A key thing is the lighting setup, you might need to play with that to find what you want -- and render out with the 'best' quality settings occasionally to see how strong shadows play out.

Good stuff, keep hammering away :)

Now he has a body. Posing him on this position was really a hell of a task. I had to do several times and correct the mesh a lot to get him in place. I don't know, maybe I have to practice more with the transpose master. Still to much to do and to correct. Comments and critics are welcome! Cheers!

Hi Ralph,

Sorry for the fp tiff, I dislike when people are blatantly rude to an artist. However I think you have a good model here with room for great improvement, and I look forward to seeing your future sculpts. Studying from masters is definitely the way to go, I think. :)

Hi Rebecca, I think also it was unnecessary how the whole thread end up but I am taking the crits in a constructive way. I think I know already what I'm doing next and it will be certainly the right project for the moment . I am thinking about doing an Écorché model. I found googling some references from Houdon's but they were not many and in low resolution. Maybe you have a suggestion for another écorché reference or a tip for some links. Thank you very much!!

Hey Ralph, there was actually a recent Ecorche workshop here on the forum that you should definitely check out: :)

CAFÉ Special Stage 01 - THE MALE ÉCORCHÉ (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=509909&highlight=ecorche)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=509909&highlight=ecorche

It utilizes some free resources from Freedom of Teach, which is incidentally the maker of the best ecorche model out there:

http://www.freedomofteach.com/products/

They are also coming out with a female version soon, I believe, as well as reference busts.

Looking forward to your new sculpt! :)
