Well, I thought I would share with you a recent piece of work that I completed.
I wasn't going to post this one here, but there were lots of constraints that I had to deal with, so i thought some might like to see it..

Basically the brief was to take the still image and create a snow scene from it. However, the brief stated that realism was the aim, yet the snow particles had to be seen to settle on the ground and house...go figure... so that limited my matte painting to going from a full snow scene, to more of a frosty scene, or lightly snowy scene as though it has only bee snowing for a minute. Also, the massive time constraints on this meant that the simulation could not have as high a particle rate as i would have liked, or it just wouldn't render in time...
So everything was completed very quickly, but i am still quite happy with the result, especially considering the pressure.

And here is a link to the final shot (10 seconds). Sorry for the low quality, but youtube is the only option i have to upload this right now...

Work carried out in Photoshop (matte painting), XSI (3D geometry and particle simulation), and Combustion (compositing).

Like to hear your thoughts. All the best.

I am playing with combustion at the moment, it has steep learning curve. I am trying to convince work to buy it. Though after effects feels natural to me as I am a photoshop professional. I like the snow effect.

I would have done it slighty differently but you said you had limited time. I would have foregound particle then in 3d create a matte of the house with separate layers and mattess for the wall, roof, rear garden and placed in particle layers this will show depth and given cutoff points for the snow to go somewhere. A really cool particle effect i noticed in Golden Compass is the snow om the ground eddying up with updrafts and wind.

You missed a trick also if you had put a light in a window and did a z depth move it would look really cool, but hindsight and time is awonderful thing.

Looks cool (no pun intended)

Have fun

Rich.
