I need to render some small cover plates that are made of:
1. Stainless Steel (brushed)
2. Copper (with what looked like a rough, blasted finish)

I have jpgs of the materials, but can't get them to look perfect. The SS is the most troublesome. I've looked for tutorials or examples everywhere I know of, but the metal materials are more standardized.
What I've started is to make a bump map in PS by blurring some noise. It does not look like real ss, though.
Suggestions? Should I put the map in the specular slot, too?
Does anyone have a material or settings they'd like to share :-)?
I've looked through Secondrealities tuts and a few others, but no luck.
It's a flat surface, too.

Thanks.

The trick of nice metals is in the blurred reflection, here is a good tutorial about it:

Be sure you get a good book or something, because blurred reflections are very slow to render! :)

Mr. Blevins has a few things to say as well.
