View Full Version : HMC #12 - Capitan Colossus
groutcho 12-12-2007, 10:45 AM Hi Everybody,
This is my entry to the Hardcore Modelling challenge #12 - Colossus. This is my first entry in a challenge, so i will do my best to follow the rules and achieve a good work.
My colossus will be a colossal statue (around 300 meters high) depicting the Capitan, a warrior sent by a king to stop an invasion of monsters at the entrance of the Canyon.
The monsters were slain to the last, but the Capitan died after being severely wounded, being the last man standing on the field. The last stand of the Capitan's army will be remembered by the construction of a huge memorial statue.
In the Capitan's helmet is carved a temple, surrounded by a golden dome. The statue also lies on a pedestal.
I think the temple carved will convey the sense of scale, since it will be surrounded by pillars which will show the proportions of the statue.
I am currently designing the parts of his armor, and his weapons.

Okay here is a quick photoshopped rough to set the overall pose and stuff :

I'm going to model a 3d rough to set it up.

Great work, but dont forget the proportions of the base of the statue (300m!)
I like the idea that I'm not the only one who is making a non fiction statue :p

Do you mean the pedestal ? Yeah lately i just noticed it would be too thin for a giant statue, i'm going to heighten it.

Added the roughed canyon to get some clear sight of the final volume :

Great , I like the base and the canyon. But there is something missing. Or maybe the canyone are to big, I just can't seem to find out....
But the statue and the base are great, it's something around maybe....

Good idea on turning the base into a temple.

I think some stairs on the bottom would really help sell the scale of the pedastal...pedastl... peda... the bottom part.

lol, coulnd't find the word either.
Well I think it was the idea though. Maybe you could set some wall to cover the entrance of the canyon.
Djeezus I'm thinking of ideas for your model instead of working on mine :p
I'll get back to work on mine soon :)

Well thanks much for your advice ! About the stairs, actually they are on place : the ramp leading to the temple, although it's not detailed for now, i just put a rough shape to figure it.
About the canyon, i will try different sizes, it's not definitive. And around the statue, I though i could add a big forest, almost covering the lower parts of the temple, but i don't know if i will have time for this, it will depend on my progress i guess.
Anyway thanks

Here is a quick occlusion render of the entrance (because the main light doesn't show the details very well)

i love the progress, but just want to say that right now u should focus on the modeling part then u can playing with the rendering part..keep going

Actually I do, but the occlusion render is the only way to get the details on sight, without setting up a big light/compositing.

It's gorgeous! Can't wait to see more! :applause:
I can only say, that there's no need to model the bricks, 'couse you can texture them later... =) Why do u model em? For fun?

Nice progress :)

Well with the huge amount of different elements, UV mapping and texturing would be a real pain in the *beep*, so I will texture only the biggest parts, and let the smallest parts with procedural shading, the geometric detail will do the rest. Thanks :)
wow I'm loving the progress. It looks so COLOSSAL and huge. Dang! How tall is this, 1000m!!!???
Aaawesome

Looking good! :)
You could put a beacon inside the helmet instead of a temple? A 300 meter high colossal lighthouse would look great :)

I started the armor :

Added the scales on the armor. Note that the armor is almost entirely made of SubDs, which doesn't render very well with MR, i will convert them into poly later.

What the heck, he looks sooo huge...are those the real sizes? (am looking at the stairs...)
groutcho

To get an idea of the colossus size, just look at the two gates, on the base. The gates are 4 meters high.
another update of the armor.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh112/groutcho_photos/armor3.jpg
I don't know if i should keep the shield. I don't know where to put it. On the base, it tends to cuts the colossus settling. On his back, it adds some round volume that doesn't seem to add to his greatness.
What do you advice ?

nice progress.....i think the shield in his right hand is also better...

Splendid. I love the cleaness of the foundation. The armor and sword are very nicely executed too and the facial modelling is comming along quite nice as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest.

Still the SubD don't render well in MR, gotta convert them (huge amount of triangles, though)
