HI
My background is with Lightwave, AutoCAD and MAX since mid 90's and never looked at MAYA before, (I tried once and ordered thier FREE Version CD for 20 bucks w/ shipping on line but they never sent it) But anyways,, in my background of CAD I have been seeing some EXCELLENT work being done with studio tools and I was curoius, is Studio Tools a seperate program from MAYA or does it need to run from with-in MAYA? ,, I visited thier web site and did not get a clear indication that would answer my question so I am asking it here.

Thanks for any help.

They're separated. Studio is a nurbs based app for industrial design, Maya is an animation package.

They are different packages but you can freely move data between them...

KaBab,, LOL no it wasnt Pirate software,,, when they made the free personal version available for download you had an option to order the CD also for 9 bucks.. plus shipping it came to like 18 bucks...I just wanted to have a CD copy,

Disputed the charge?? no, I just swore I would never purchase thier products ever in the future,,, LOL I am funny like that, I expect people to live up to thier agreements with me and they failed. BUT,, this Studio Tools has me thinking twice about my boycott....... LOL

And thanks all for the feedback!!!

I ordered a disk like that a year or so ago. but that was before ple and it pissed me off. although that watermark wasn't there.
you couldn't do batch renders cant go past a certain resolution or quality render settings. and holly shit man. you cant even save your stuff. so you have to do a whole project without closeing.

I was just wondering. does studio tools like maya. how are they similar

Studio is based on the old Alias code base. It's much better for high-precision modeling, but animation features aren't that great and deformation tools don't work that well with the advanced modeling functionality.

Interface-wise, there are a few similarities and many, many differences.

ooppps. sorry about that.

what exactly do you mean by high precision modeling

It has better tools for accurately placing CVs, better support for high-order NURBS curves, and other related features.

These are not the only things that make its modeling better, but they're the primary reason that Studio lives on as its own product, particularly in the product design arena.

Maya has completely supplanted it in animation production.

If you read the Studio Tools web page you'll get an idea for where the product's being directed:

Its used alot for "A class" surfaces so you get perfect smooth surfaces and reflections very important if you are in the automotive business.

It also has a whole heaps of skectching tools which are very very very good for concept development some what of a cross between photoshop and illustrator.

Hang on a sec: you'll have to put some time in to learn what models you can expect to get out of Alias Studio if you're going from there to Maya. Also, Studio doesn't have the animation tools you need by itself.

Before jumping on Studio as an animation solution, I recommend becoming VERY familiar with its capabilities. It's almost certainly not what you want, even just for modeling, if animation is your ultimate goal.

NO, I am Core CAD, Mechanical, Product, Arch Vizualizations and Idea Guy.... I animate on spare time for fun, but my bread and butter is in CAD.

If you can afford it you could always get them both :) alot of companies do this.

I saw a demo once from the one of the lead designers from Fisher-Price, they would design all there toys in Studio Tools then bring them into Maya and animated them to sell the idea to management etc.

There was one example where they had modeled a roller skate and they wanted to make a modification which would have been really hard in Studio Tools so they loaded the model in Maya and used the latice deformer on it then bought it back into Studio Tools and finished the model then back to maya for rendering.
