you could try noise with an alpha channel. either that you could photo shop/body paint some scar marks for it

Use maxons dirty nuts plugin in the difuse channel of your paint texture. Sorry I dont know where to find it, but I think its somewhere in plugin cafe. And for the chrome I would probally do what JIII said. If you dont know how the stuff works Id be happy to make some examples. Nice model :) I'm a huge fan of star wars...

You could use the cloud shader in the alpha channel of your base texture along with dirty nuts in the diffusion. Adjust the cloud shader so it only shows up like chipped paint. Then, layer this with a metalic texture on the bottom to give the appearance of chipped/weathered paint on metal. It works well.

Good luck!

Sorry it took a bit longer than I expected, I got a bit carried away and my mouse died but I finished :)

Just ask if anything is puzzling you, I don’t have much to do this week and would be more than glad to answer questions.

The file is here http://www.geocities.com/ndat2002/
Sorry for the mess just concentrate on what’s in bold and you should find the file.

Another good trick I use is make a copy of your material, then in the copy itself take the color channel and paste it into a hue and sat shader and lower the lightness just around 2 - 3 points depending how dirty you want it to look.Next go to your alpha channel and select a noise shader and use turbulence, make it about 160 - 180% global and also play around with the high key low key sliders so that you can make the diffusion or grime effect more localised with harder edges then say just a grime which spreads lightly over everything but is hard to make out on its base layer :) The add your dirty nuts to the diffusion channel as well if you like.

(if the image does not previews here, copy/paste this link into a new browser window: http://www20.brinkster.com/rui3d/files/dirt.jpg)

The file can be downloaded here:

dirt file (http://www20.brinkster.com/rui3d/files/dirt.c4d)

I usually create several layers of dirt. This way I can control the stacking order and I can also re-use the textures for several objects.
Pay no attention to the model (it was made in a few minutes ;) )
It has a ground_dirt layer that is the mud deposit when the ship is hoovering moist terrain.
It also has a front_dirt layer that is the mud and dust deposit it ship gathers as it speeds just above the ground.
I also included a oil_streak layers that is nothing more that a few oily streaks from where the engine spill some.
This was all made in a few minutes so it is not completely real.
But I believe the file will help out seeing my method. It's not THE METHOD but it is nice and effective. I just wish we get texture trees soon so that all the editing becomes easier ;-)

p.s. I used no dirtyNUTS here because it would not help much here (it was already discussed here) and it would add up too much to the render time of this simple example.

Try copy/pasting the url into a new browser window. It usually works. If not, tell me your mail and I will be glad to send it for you.
