View Full Version : Can I export stuff from Max into a Flash or Illustrator file?
LanMan_themovie 04-20-2003, 02:21 AM I'm doing a Flash animation here, and I was thinking of modeling some of it first in Maya. But I don't see a good way to do that yet, so, at my new job I can use Max. Is there an easy way to layout a shot in Max and then export it to some kind of format for those other vector art programs?
I would want it with or without animation export capability. If I could animate it first in Max or (preferably) Maya, that would be awesome. But even if all I can do is export a still .eps or .ai file, that would still be a great help.
I have only have a few days to do it, so I can't wait for Maya 5.

YES you can in fact do both. For a client about a year ago I had to convert a running cheetah into a illustrator still and a flash animation.
Get the plugin called swift3d (http://www.swift3d.com). It is a replacement renderer that can render into flash format and as far as I know it's the best out there right now (there is no easy select flash format export option in max 5).
If you want to do illustrator, I did this by exporting the file directly from max by selecting an object and file>export selected and change the export file type to illustrator. You probably will need to convert your 3d objects surface into a spline or shape object first. Also, the max to Adobe conversion is unreliable, you'll have to tweak a lot of things to get an illustrator file you can use.

You can also look into getting Illustrate (http://www.davidgould.com) which did a much better and faster job than swift. (However this pertains to swift1.0 and not the most recent. I haven't used that one so I can't compare)

yes you can use swift 3d and illustrate.
now you have plasma, vectra3d, and maya 5 that comes out next month has a vector rendering sys for direct export to flash.
plasma is cool becasue it is like an easier version of max that exports right to flash.
vectra 3d can be pluged right into max and exported out.
a good idea is to go to flashkit.com.
they have tutorials for doing this and diffrent progs that you can take a look at.
