View Full Version : Using a Reference Monitor with After Effects: How to set up?

Hi,
I'm trying to speed up my workflow for using after effects. I'm testing my compositions by rendering out MPEGS to a DVD, to preview on my TV. Very slow and wasteful...

So, how would one set up a reference monitor for previewing on? The AE previews can be sent directly to a 'device', as stated in the help document. But, how do you do this?

Do you need a special video card? I've got a mid-range GeForce FX card.
If anyone has some info for me, I'd love to hear it.

I'm checking the video for gamma and video-safe colors, etc...

Many thanks!

Geoff

Hi Geoff.

For previewing work in AE to a monitor there are numerous options.

By ideal solutions, I'd recommend one of the Decklink or Matrox capture cards. BUT... if all you want is to preview on a monitor... then those cards are way overkill. Bear in mind as well that for colour critical work you'll need a professional broadcast monitor to ensure WYSIWYG.

Depending on your system and features you want, you'll have to research into the subject to make the best decision for you. Do a search on the internet for "video capture cards" and start there.

On the "poor man's" side of things, you can also use a camcorder with firewire output to send the AE signal to your regualr TV monitor. I use the aforementioned at my house when I work from home -- but still rely on the studio monitors at the office for colour accuracy.

m|3,

Thanks, I think I'm gonna go the camcorder route, which I hadn't thought of. That'll get me in the color-safe ballpark before I burn DVDs to look at.

Thanks for the good advice!

Hey Geoff...

Be aware that you will not have a guaranteed colour accurate image if you are using a consumer grade TV.

If your computer monitor is professional and has been calibrated, you should trust what you see there and use the TV for all other references.
