View Full Version : Hollowing?

Out of curiosity does maya have a Hollow feature of some type? Those that are familiar with FPS level design may know what i mean, but for those of you that dont;

As in hollow i mean, overlap two modeling objects, such as two poly boxes, select one and use the hollow feature, the selected box gets deleted, cutting out shape of the non highlighted box, hence having a big wall, then cutting a simple arc out of it..

I hope you understand what i mean, as i am not too well at elaborating myself, not entirely sure but the feature "hollow" may be called CGI subtract, or something along those lines..

Thanks in advanced...

I´m not sure,
but I think You mean "Boolean" ,

With this function, you can add, substract or get only the intersecting part of two intersecting objects. It works with Nubrs and Poly, but under certain circumstances, it´s a little buggy.

You can read more about it in the help-files

I believe that would be a boolean, though from what I hear they can cause problems when it comes to texturing.

Polygons/booleans/difference

If it all possible, stay away from using Booleans.

They will definitely give you problems, even if you're doing really simple renders.

It's worth your time to learn how to model without using them.

Good luck either way.

what are u talking about. booleans are very helpfull to me.

and with polys to do waht you are talking about use the difference boolean option. the second object that you select will be the one to go and the firs will be the one you keep and if you go into the outliner(i think. if not the hypergraph) and you can select the second object and move scale rotate or whatever and you will see the firs objects shape update.

ironicly enough i was just coming here to look up how to solve boolean problems. i am getting some strange things happening... edges appearing and dissapearing... and no matter what i do (cleanup etc) it seems to still consider the hollowed out areas as "holes"
very strange behaviour indeed :surprised

Have you tried deleting the history? I have no idea if that will help, but it comes to mind.

I've also experieced several problems with Maya Booleans. Booleans usually work really great except that from time to time the difference operation will just delete both objects! Buggy crap! Also, does anyone know how to boolean addition multiple objects to another at once? I'm trying to add a staircase (made of duplicated boxes) to my pyramid and I have to select each stair and go Polygons>Boolean>Addition . This is, needless to say, a major pain in the ass.

You can try the poly combine option. and you can separate them afterwards if youwant to. it is kinda weird though. just play with it.
for the booleans. you cant do multiple operations. maybe with a 3rd party plugin but cant normally be done in maya
