View Full Version : HCM #12: Colossus: Medusa
sallyem 12-09-2007, 08:16 AM Hi All,
This is my first time entering a challenge, so I’m very excited!
My colossus statues’ theme will be Medusa.
Through my research, only her death has been immortalized as a statue. She was slain by Perseus so he could use her head covered by live snakes as a weapon. Throughout history, the symbol of her head persisted, but her body forgotten.
I want portray Medusa in her own glory; beautiful yet terrifying and deadly, surrounded by serpents. She was a guardian, protector, and considered monster. One gaze from her could turn you to stone.
The next step now, is sketching up some concept art…..
More updates and images to come soon!

Day 2,
Today I started drawing a character profile for Medusa. I have decided to model her in a mostly neutral pose, then rig her (at this stage) for her final position.
My method for creating the profiles is: pencil -> ink -> scan -> photoshop.
I'm not the best at drawing, but thats why there is photoshop!
Thanks to everyone who's read this thread so far, its really encouraging!
I hope to have all my profiles and concept art finished asap, so I can jump straight into Maya and start getting a base mesh happening.

Hi Sallyem, Medusa is an iconic image, I'm sure you'll do her proud.
Gathering ref and sketching out your concept is essential, really knowing what you are going to do before you get started, having most things worked out, so as to not inhibit the fluidity of the modeling process. What software will you be using? Will you use zbrush?
Looking forward to seeing more concepts/wip shots.

Firstly, thankyou Stripe for your words of confidence! I'll be working mostly in Maya8 and a bit of mudbox on the side for detailing. I have tried Zbrush, but my personal preference is Mudbox.
I've spent some more time working on my concept for Medusa, trying to figure out how I want her to look and what type of feeling I want the statue to convey overall...
In my first few sketches, I gave her a kind of solemn look, beautiful yet kind of sad. I'm now leaning towards a more terrifying look, one that would turn you to stone.
Still working on the body.. Not quite decided if she will be human or searpent from the waist down...
Comments and critique welcome!
Sketch done in pencil, touched up in Illustrator & Photoshop...

This one will be nice :p
When i was a kid I was so inspired by the myths, And it's kind of ironic she would be a statue :)

Well, its been a busy week..
I have started modelling Medusa's head in Maya. My technique is start with one square and extrude from there! I see alot of people doing the box method, which is great, but I thought i'd try a different approach...
After I'm happy with my base mesh, i'll refine it in Mudbox. I am happy so far with the expression on her face, it's probably not the final expression she will have, but getting towards it...
I have been recording the whole process using Camtasia, I plan to put it all together as a timelapse animation when done.. comming soon!
Here's a screenshot of my work to date!...
