Using the Shape Facing operator what would you say is the best way to go about creating dust, in terms of creating the actual material?

A face mapped material with a radial gradient in the opacity channel - try using different size noise maps in the different slots. If you do a search for the blur scripts on scriptspot.com have a look at the material the smokethis script generates - it's pretty much what you want.
