View Full Version : Car Explosion with live action

Hey there, First Post !

Been just doing some doodling ... shot some live action using my handycam, then tracked the camera into 3ds max ... the tracking needs fixing as it looses integrity towards the end, (need to get those track curves smoother) ....

Everything has been rendered in passes which were

The Car
Window glass
Shockwave
Dust
Explosion
Amboient ligthing (used to illumniate the live plate to make the ground blend in better with the explosion)
Shadows
Debris
Beauty Pass

SOme need fixing ...

Added some sound effects at testing phase to look at timing etc ...

Then everthing was put together using AFter Effects, some colour grading etc to make the match better.

its not perfect just yet but please let me know your thought

I have also noticed that the glass towards the end looks like triangles ... need to fix that

If you guys want i can post screenshots of all the layers used ... or a layer by layer animation reconstruction..

dude that was sweet as hell....................the only thing that sticks out is amount of particles.

Mabe turn amount down a bit. But damm that looks so cool man. Great job

Very nice! What 3D software are you using? What did you use to explode to skin of the car? At the very end just before it returns to its original state, I love the broken-up look thats visible on the side of the car. The shockwave is brilliant as well!

For future tracking, look into the software called BouJou. It has a really nice automatic tracking wizard that will export it for use in Maya, 3DS, or several other 3D apps. I'm only just starting to get into tracking, but thats what i'm using so far.

Used 3ds Max ...I considered many ways for the car to explode, turning into particles etc .... but i decided i was going to use the simplest of tools a BOMB modifier .. Only because i can easily animate the time and strength and make everything reverse back in one take. That has some penalties as the debris do not posess dynamics and tend to look thin. Perhaps in the finall ill find a way of using dynamics and be able to reverse the explosion (cant do that in post as the camera still moves forward in real time)

Yes i used Boujou only problem is that I had about 2 hours of access to it and no one around to teach me how to use it !, everything looked fine before export .. then when I took tracking data home ... it didnt translate so well....

Ill try and get more access to it in the near future ... for now ill have to work with a broken track :)
