View Full Version : HCM #12: Colossus: The Motherland Calls
gamePat 12-08-2007, 08:04 PM Allright, I'm joining you in this modelling madness
Since I always loved big statues, I guess it's my duty to participate in this.
This is going to be awesome and I can not wait to see all those impressive stuff.
Subject: The Motherland Calls
This one impressed me the most, so I will do my best to honor her beauty.
Attachments: The result of my reference image research. I have a lot! more and most of them are crazy high-res, but here is a small overview of the most interesting pictures.

Some more research & measurement:
Height: 82m
Distance head to ground 52m
Length of the sword: 33m
Inner socket height 2m
Outer socket height 1,4m
Figured out with th help of GoogleEarth :D:
width inner socket: 20m
width outer socket: 28m
Workflow:
I will start with modelling the basemeshes for the socket first and then the Statue itself in Max. Most of the modelling will be done in ZBrush then. The ground the statue is standing on, will belong to the statue-mesh, since there is no hard border or seam between it. The transition from the "soil" to the feet and the clothing is very smooth (See attached image).
I will try to keep the statue in one mesh as far and as long as it's possible. If I really have to split it up at some point, I might do the arms and maybe also the lower/upper body separately.

I was really hoping some one would do this sculpture. It's one of my personal favorites.
Needless to say, I will be following this thread closely!

Roughing out the size:
So I finally started on something visible in 3d. I just tried to do some rough blocking with a bit more than a cube to see how the size (82 Meters) works.
Nothing spectacular here but just a first test. I figured out that the size looks right, but looking up from the bottom (Image attached) you don't see much ;)
Here's a small progress gif attached (I need to make screenshots more often :) )
The best reference for the base that I found so far is a very nice youtube video a guy did:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uhy3QkbZjpE
Watching the video I realized that I have to correct some measurement-values in the previous post.

Starting with the pedestral
So, to show some more progress I will post some pictures of the base, that I started.
It consists of plates that I copied as instances. I snapped them to each other in order to have no holes in the mesh. In the end I will attach all plates and create some irregularities and/or cracks in Max and ZBrush.
I tried to stick to my measurments and to the reference I got as close as possible in order to have as few problems as possible later.
One thing, that I still don't understand, is how the border between the stone-statue and the marble pedestral will look like. I think I might need to search for some better references.

Why did you divide the steps with one subdivision ? Is that for a future smooth or ?

groutcho:
Well, it seems that the pictures don't show it very well, but I just extruded in the gap between the plates. You're right, on the pictures it somehow looks like there was only one line.
Nothing is smoothed here yet. I will not go further into detail here, until I know that the staue base mesh is done and I know that it fits.
Edit:
Yeah sorry about that. I will add a rendering with light and shadow next time, so you can see the surface better ;)

Ah indeed, after further examination i saw the gap. Can't wait for a render though, it will be much visible ! :)

Working on the Base
I didn't have a lot of time to work for the challenge in the last few days, but here's some progress from today.
Some things I found out is, that I shouldn't spend too much time placing dummy-objects. If they don't fit in any corner, I should just scale them down. The more important thing will be the statue. If there is one more stone than it should be, it doesn't matter.
Since there is an attachment limit here in the forum, I will post external links now to the pictures.
Some progress screenshots:

For the outer ring of stone-blocks I created 3 Vatiations that will be copied and rotated as instances.
But those stones need be redone, the turned out too "blobby".
