View Full Version : lagging 2nd processor on renders

I see this behavior now and again: I'm rendering hi res, best AA, etc. to picture window, and my 2nd processor render line kicks in well after the 1st processor. For instance, I'm rendering a Danel tex with anistrophy & reflections on a Boole object, and the render is about half done (15 minutes, so far). The 2nd processor render line didn't appear until 11 minutes had passed.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Is it normal behavior for C4D?

Mac dual gig, OSX 10.2.3, R8.1, 1.75GB ram

personally this is probibly not a C4D issue MAC OS X is probibly just trying to conserve processor power. Mess around with your utilities a bit, you might be able to specify certin tasks get more power. If that doesnt workit can be fixed through unix (how I don't know). But it can be done.

perhaps in c4d preferences, give it high thread priority?

Just a shot in the dark...i dont use a mac, so i wouldnt know if its a mac problem or not.

well i just was thinking that that might be it. but really I don't know it could be that his comp just doesnt like him.

my computer loves me...

BTW, me is a her :) As it turns out, the render is over 1.5 hours, so a lagging 11 minutes at the beginning is not such a big deal. I'll see about the "high thread priority" suggestion and maybe send off a question to Maxon support.

Hi Brucie,
depending on the scene the renderer has sometimes to collect/compute information about/from the scene befor rendering can start. This will happen especialy with reflections and transparencies and is completely normal. Switching on High Thread priority will not help much.

Hi Srek,

Is it normal for one processor to begin so long after the other? (in this case ~11min.)

thanks, Brucie

This only depends on your scene, so yes, i can be pretty normal.

I think utilities like Nicer and Renicer can set priorities for apps under OSX. Haven't checked them out myself, although I should (DP 1.42/OSX 10.25).

Brucie,
could it be that the lag is because you have more of the image in the second half of the frame? I have a dual processor too and depending on where the hard (to render) part of scene is, it usually starts quicker in the area with less to calculate. This of course, is usually the top as we usually leave some head room.
Just guessing though.

Bingo! I think you're right on the money. The 2nd processor had to start rendering right in the middle of all that anistrophic, environment map and reflection portion of my metal boolean image. See this thread with image link:

Great. I looked up the thread, very nice image there.
I checked out your site , real nice "less is more " design.
I also really like the "playful " nature of your images.
cheers
