View Full Version : kernel32.dll problem with max 5??
robo3687 04-19-2003, 11:03 AM I keep experiencing ongoing problems with max, errors keep occuring in the kernel32.dll file........
i know its a file that isn't with max.....but with windows.......and it is an evil file.......very evil
i would like 2:wip: it over the head (if it had one)
anyway this error sometimes occurs when i'm working on a complex model.....and then when i restart MAX (mostly after restarting my computer) i hide some polygons and it last for a while longer
but there are other times when it just happens randomly.......which gets very very annoying (my autoback folder has like more that 60 max files in it.....grr...)
so yeh i was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing these problems.??? and if anyone has any idea how to fix it?

Kernel32.dll is the windows kernel, it is the file that holds the operating system together. you really want to keep that file :P .
some information might be handy, like what version of windows you are using, what kind of pc (CPU, RAM, motherboard, graphics card, etc).
you might want to look at your pagefile size, it could be set at a too low value (max can eat quite some resources).
[edit]
a kernel error can have more causes, most of them involve damaged hardware, like bad RAM or a bad CPU, the most common cause is software-based, but bad RAM takes a great deal too, you could check it for errors with software like memtest86. an other cause is an overheated CPU. an overheated CPU makes more mistakes, and so it could result in an kernel error. you could check your temperature with Motherboard monitor, or software that came with your motherboard (i presume you use Max on a modern pc with temperature control enabled on the motherboard)
you could check those options, for other problems we need some more information about your pc (see above :) )

yeh i thought i might need to provide specs........i wasn't sure though
so here they are
Windows ME
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ processor
256mb RAM
60 GB hard-drive
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 100/200
Gigabyte Dual Bios Motherboard
anything else you need to know just ask..........
and i have a feeling you're going to say ME is the problem........if so i have XP lying around here somewhere
anyhow i'd say ME is a problem all by itself... : )
i'd say that it'd be good to get a little more Ram, as you can actually never get enought of that, and Max supposedly should run on 512 meg i think (in the prog's specs ?).

I do indeed suspect ME is the problem, ME is all known for its bugs and really worse memory handling. When using max i recomend downgrading to windows 98 or even better using an NT based windows (2000 or XP) (i wouldn't recommend NT4 for its bad 3d-handling).
though i am not a great supporter of windows XP (i never could get the darn OS to last for more than 2 weeks, i use win2k :) ), i think installing it would solve the problem.
