Loveless 04-13-2002, 08:51 AM Unsmoothed version of AK-47. Not totally finished, need to skin it, add details, fix problems, etc, etc. If I could have some help skinning, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Better looking unsmoothed version.

Whats with the polygon stretch on the top of the gun? you need to fix that ;P usually its just some vertex welding or cut a new edge going opposite direction. Attractive AK though..
:wip:

Yeah, this is only my first week modeling, so, I'll try and fix it! Thanks for critiques and comments! (us newbies dont get too many, hehe)

the ak is too thick, and the upper part is actually slimmer than the lower...
get more reference pictures, especially perspective ones to see the parts better. like weapon pages that show it disassembled and so on..
I modelled an AK for a game, as well and I ended up having some dozen images, good research is very important.

on my website you will find some shots of the blank ak model as well, if that helps.

#2 NOTE: both of these are rendered in smooth mode, not unsmoothed...unsmoothed looks a lot better ;)

What program are you using? The smooth you're applying isn't really smoothing anything.
post a wireframe and i'll see if i can help you, i have also made an ak :buttrock: .

Wings3d: I rendered smoothed, not smoothed out the model. It looks sci-fi when I smooth the model. I've kind of stopped working on this model to pursue low-poly character design (incredibly fun!) But any tips and help would be appreciated!

Thank you so much everyone for comments and critiques...that was only my fourth model. I added everything up together, and the total polycount is 444. However, 72 of those polygons came off of lame cylinders I put in for detail, so I really wasn't too efficient.
Robin: thanks for comment, I really would get a texture on it, but I dont know how to skin yet (first week into 3d...) so I'll try to learn the basics over the next week or so! Thank you!

If this isn't supposed to be a low poly game model, try to model it like it is in reality. For example, the front grip would be one piece in reality, try to model it as one piece instead of having polys crashing through each other.

thanks....I really dont like modelling detailed, I'm more of a low-poly type of person, which is prolly what I'll specialize in if I choose this for a career. I know I'll have to start making high poly guns , but I'm just not too good with detail yet, so, I'm working on it. Thank you. (in note, this was supposed to be like a model for a game, and also just an experiment)

You're doing it wrong man :\
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The CLIP is the part that arches out in front, it should be perfectly square, the HANDLE is the part near the trigger (doy :p ) It should be slightly rounded off and maybe with finger slits like you would find on a soda bottle.
Go to www.counter-strike.net and go to the weapons section, they have a pretty perfect model of an AK 47 in low poly, it will give you some ideas and lead you in right direction
good luck

I used a reference picture....there are lots of different versions of AK's. I usually just look on www.gunsamerica.com the version I had had the arch coming on the handle. Thanks fors crits, though. If anyone could give me some tips or tell me how to skin, I'd love that! Thank you!
