hmm, doesn't really answer my question, maybe I didn't make a clear enough question. When I'm making shape animations for the face of my character, how do I make a mirrored version for the other side of the face. Like, say I made a smiling face shape for the right side of the face and I wanted the smile face shape for the left side to be exactly the same.

Oh.. sorry for the confusion !
One way would be to create a symmetry map for your face: Get->Property->Symmetry map. Then whenever you need symmetry when creating your shape keys, just turn on the Sym mode in the Transform panel while moving points around.
There's also a script on Net View: XSI Net -> Tools -> Animation -> Shape -> Mirror Shape that you can check out

Lol, getting closer. I don't have a problem getting both sides to look the same in the shape, I'm having problems making the shape look different on both sides and having a mirrored version of it in another shape.
